About the Role
We are seeking an experienced and proactive
Construction Materials and Plant Buyer
to join our growing team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the procurement of materials, plant, and equipment to support a range of civil engineering and construction projects. This role is key to ensuring that the business secures the best value, maintains strong supplier relationships, and supports site teams with timely and efficient delivery of goods and services.
Key Responsibilities
Source, negotiate, and procure construction materials, plant, and equipment in line with project requirements and budgets.
Develop and maintain strong relationships with suppliers and subcontractors to ensure reliability, cost-effectiveness, and quality of supply.
Manage the procurement schedule to ensure timely delivery aligned with project programmes.
Obtain and evaluate quotations, ensuring compliance with company policies and specifications.
Raise and manage purchase orders through the company's procurement system.
Monitor supplier performance, delivery accuracy, and quality standards.
Liaise closely with project managers, site managers, and quantity surveyors to forecast demand and address site requirements.
Negotiate framework agreements and long-term supply contracts where appropriate.
Support the continuous improvement of procurement processes and contribute to cost-saving initiatives.
Ensure all procurement activity aligns with health, safety, and environmental standards.
Key Skills and Experience
Proven experience in a
buyer or procurement role
within the
construction or civil engineering sector
.
Strong knowledge of construction materials, plant, and equipment.
Excellent negotiation, communication, and organisational skills.
Ability to manage multiple procurement packages across concurrent projects.
Proficient in Microsoft Office and procurement/ERP systems.
Commercial awareness and a focus on achieving best value.
Strong attention to detail and record-keeping.
Full UK driving licence (preferred).
Qualifications
HNC/HND or degree in Construction, Civil Engineering, Quantity Surveying, or Business (desirable).
CIPS qualification or working towards it (advantageous).
