The Cafe Manager will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the cafe, leading a small team of staff and volunteers to deliver excellent customer service, consistent quality, and smooth operations. They will oversee food preparation, stock management, compliance, and financial performance, ensuring the cafe supports the railway's reputation as a leading heritage attraction.
Key Responsibilities
Manage daily cafe operations, ensuring smooth and efficient service.
Lead, train, and motivate staff and volunteers.
Oversee food safety, hygiene, and compliance with all EHO regulations.
Manage stock ordering, rotation, and supplier relationships.
Develop menus, pricing, and promotions in line with visitor demand.
Monitor sales, control costs, and achieve agreed gross profit targets.
Maintain accurate financial records, cash handling, and reporting.
Ensure a safe, welcoming, and clean environment for all customers.
Support wider railway events with catering services as required.
Liaise with management and trustees regarding performance, staffing, and investment needs.
Person Specification
Essential:
Experience managing or supervising in a cafe, restaurant, or catering environment.
Level 2 Food Hygiene qualification.
Strong leadership and people management skills.
Excellent customer service focus and communication skills.
Knowledge of food hygiene standards and health & safety regulations.
Ability to manage stock, budgets, and financial reporting.
Flexible, proactive, and able to work weekends and bank holidays.
Desirable:
Level 3 Food Hygiene qualification (or willingness to obtain).
Experience working with volunteers.
Passion for heritage railways and community-based projects.
Barista skills and experience with coffee machines.
