We are looking for a proactive, organised and hands-on Catering Supervisor to oversee the day-to-day running of the front-of-house operations at The Corn Exchange Cafe, part of Dorchester Arts. You will be responsible for managing the cafe and liaising with the bar team, ensuring high standards of service, and developing our food and drink offer. You report to the Venue Manager.
Key Responsibilities
Leading by example providing excellent customer service to all our building patrons.
Oversee the smooth daily running of the Corn Exchange Cafe front of house
Order stock from trusted cafe suppliers and build strong working relationships with potential new suppliers to ensure competitive pricing and excellent customer support. For example, our main suppliers for baked goods are Peppina in Poundbury.
Manage and track stock levels using the SumUp POS system, including the built-in stock management functionality.
Develop and update food and drink menus for the cafe with the opportunity to develop your own range of products, for example baked goods and savoury lunches. There is also the opportunity to create catering options for venue hires in collaboration with the Venue Manager.
Organise service operations for the cafe, including staff training, documentation, and adherence to all food safety, hygiene, and health & safety standards.
To be customer facing working 4 days a week in the cafe and 1 day per week in the office for administrative duties - with flexibility to manage your own time and responsibilities.
Create staff rotas in partnership with the Venue Manager to ensure adequate coverage for the cafe - including cover for holidays and sickness.
Assist with recruitment and training of cafe, and if needed bar, staff and volunteers.
Collaborate with the Dorchester Arts Marketing Manager to promote the Cafe & Bar, including through social media and subscriber e-newsletters.
Help develop and strengthen the cafe and bar's brand with the support of the wider Dorchester Arts team.
Use SumUp POS to generate financial and stock reports for the Venue Manager and Finance Manager.
Support Dorchester Arts volunteers in handling reception desk enquiries and ticket sales.
Assist volunteers in managing sales and enquiries related to the Corn Exchange gallery space.
Person Specification
Essential:
Demonstrable experience in food & beverage service, at least at Supervisor level
Previous experience of kitchen work - including baking, preparation, cooking and serving.
Experience using POS systems (preferably SumUp), including adding products, managing stock, and running sales and financial reports
Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
Highly organised with strong administrative ability
Self-motivated and confident in taking initiative
Able to prioritise tasks and manage multiple deadlines
Flexible, adaptable and calm under pressure
Good team player with effective people management skills
Willingness to work evenings and weekends when required
Competence with Microsoft Excel and basic IT systems
Experience using social media for business promotion
