Champions is an intervention style programme that aims at reducing reoffending. It is delivered in the community and in custody to divert people aged 10 to 25 away from crime.

Working as part of the Lancashire Violence Reduction Network (VRN), specialist Champions Mentor will engage young children & adults during to produce a development plan to assist the client in fulfilling their own goals relating to personal development, education, training and employment whilst also engaging in social & physical activities.

Essential Qualifications:

Full driving license and the use of a vehicle with Business Insurance

GCSE in Maths & English Grade 4 and above

Safeguarding

Mental Health First Aid

Essential Skills and Knowledge:

Exceptional listener, who is capable of engaging and building a rapport with people. The Champions Mentor will often be seen as a friendly face and as the non-judgmental side of the criminal justice system. The Champions Mentor will be impartial and open minded in their decision-making processes.

Be able to be assertive and at times deal with confrontational situations.

The role has an element of exposure to managed risk. You will need to be risk aware and have the necessary skills to minimise risk.

Be able to integrate quickly into the environment of the police custody suite working to a common goal with all members of the police family.

Possessing excellent interpersonal skills. A clear communicator with the ability to connect with people from all backgrounds, walks of life and different cultures.

Be able to work independently but also as part of a team, acting with professionalism, integrity and empathy.

A willingness to learn, with a measured and consistent approach at all times.

Knowledge of processes to safeguard children, young people, and vulnerable adults.

Experience:

Experience of mentoring individuals over long periods of time.

Experience of working with vulnerable young people within a youth work, education or custodial environment.

Monitoring and evaluation of programmes.

Achieving set targets and outputs.

Minimum of 2 years of delivering community programmes

Knowledge of the Criminal Justice System

Youth Offending Service or similar working background

Awareness and understanding of Morecambe and the surrounding area

Mentoring, Counselling or Youth Work Experience.

KEY TASKS:

Working daily engaging with, various members of the police family & wide range of stakeholders. The Champions Mentor will remain completely independent from the police investigation whilst delivering this programme.

Adopt a trauma-informed approach to work with all individuals aged 10 and above, the aim is to gain an understanding of their behaviour and support individuals to increase their confidence, resilience and wellbeing, whilst reducing their offending behaviours. The programme will offer positive alternatives to young people such as education, training, volunteering, and community-based activities such as football, boxing, table tennis, walking etc.

Responsibility to successfully engage individuals to assess their motivation to make positive change & start an intervention plan to prevent them from reoffending.

Occasionally work in the police custody suite working with detainees who fit the Champions programme criteria

Working with drug intervention and mental health specialists, education partners, employability stakeholders & probation staff to provide a 'joined up' working approach to the intervention plan

Offering an holistic approach with a whole host of highly beneficial services such as: wraparound support, signposting, community activities via the trust and support into activities provided by other local organisations. This will all be aimed at trying to establish the young person's goal and aspirations, then inspiring them onto a pathway to achieve this.
