Job Description

Hornet Services Sailing Club provides sailing, marina, and social facilities to Serving and Veteran members of the Armed Forces and supporting Civil Servants. Located on the edge of Haslar Creek, the club offers a fantastic working environment with stunning views over the Marina and Portsmouth Harbour.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Chef/Cook to take a leading role in food preparation and kitchen management within a well-established sailing club. The successful applicant will work closely with the Head Chef to ensure high-quality food service and customer satisfaction. This role requires an experienced, self-motivated individual with strong teamwork skills and a passion for food service.

The role is initially casual hours that could lead to 20+ hours per week, negotiable and will involve lunchtime, evening, and weekend work. A 6-month probation period applies.

Key Responsibilities:

Kitchen and Food Service Management:

- Oversee day-to-day food preparation and presentation, ensuring high quality standards.

- Prepare food to the highest standard of quality at all times.

- Assist with food ordering, stock control, and routine stock takes.

- Minimise food waste through portion control and accurate record-keeping.

- Adhere to company policies, procedures, and food safety regulations.

- Assist with menu planning and pricing strategy.

- Maintain cleanliness and hygiene in the kitchen, including carrying out deep cleaning as required.

- Ensure effective communication with customers and demonstrate a helpful attitude at all times.

- Liaise with customers to ensure their event requirements are met and expectations exceeded.

- Carry out additional duties as requested by management.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria:

- NVQ Level 2 qualification, including Food Hygiene Certificate Level 2.

- Ideally minimum of 2 years' experience in a professional kitchen. We are willing to offer training for the ideal person.

- Strong customer-focused skills with a professional and approachable manner.

- Effective communication skills across various formats (face-to-face, electronic, telephone, written).

- Experience working effectively as part of a team.

- Ability to demonstrate personal initiative and prioritise workload effectively.

- Adaptability and the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.

- Willingness to learn new skills as systems and needs evolve.

- Passion for food, its presentation, service, and quality.

Desirable Criteria:

- Additional certifications in food safety or kitchen management.

- Experience in event catering or function planning.
