Reporting to the Site Engineering Manager, the Chief Engineer will provide technical leadership and focus on technical excellence within the Engineering Department. This will principally involve oversight of Integrated Project Teams responsible for the development, manufacture and support of technical solutions that meet customer, business, regulatory, safety and human factors requirements.
This position is a key member of the Engineering Leadership Team and Site Airworthiness Board and requires the position holder to possess the relevant experience to be appointed as a Company Design Signatory, responsible for both initial and continued airworthiness. In doing so, they must assume the correct level of maturity, competence and integrity to execute these duties effectively. A key part of this role is to provide the interface with external certification authorities, approval bodies and the Site Production Organisation.
Your responsibilities
Ensure product safety and compliance with legislative, regulatory and customer requirements (including environmental and physical requirements)
Company Design Signatory and Certification Authority point of contact
Preparation, checking and/or approval of project design and certification documents
Chair Technical Design reviews, internal and external, throughout the development lifecycle
Ensure robust quality, performance, cost and time trade-offs are undertaken and then establish technical solutions coherent with the agreed budgets and timescales
Provide direction, control, evaluation and recommendations with regard to technical risks and opportunities
Manage and communicate issues to senior management
Ensure the continued effectiveness of the Business Management System that defines the Product Design & Certification process and the associated development lifecycle
Essential experience required in order to be considered for this role:
Bachelor's Degree qualified in an Engineering related field or equivalent relevant experience
5+ years of experience in within a highly regulated engineering design environment with demonstrable underpinning knowledge of the full developmental lifecycle
Strong background in avionics systems design (experience with flight and navigation systems is desirable)
A thorough methodical approach to design activities and exceptional attention to detail.
Substantial analytical and technical problem-solving skills
Sound understanding of the Systems lifecycle as defined in ARP4754 - up to and including FDAL B
Knowledge of current Systems Engineering, Software Engineering and Electronics Engineering standards and techniques particularly with respect to flight certified civil airborne systems (EUROCAE ED-79/SAE ARP4754, SAE ARP4761, EUROCAE ED-80/RTCA DO-254, EUROCAE ED-12/RTCA DO-178, EUROCAE ED-14, CS-ETSO, CS-23, CS-25, CS-27, CS-29)
Previous experience in a similar role as a CVE or Design Signatory for avionics systems
Self-motivated leader and team player capable of working with minimum direction
Possess excellent communication and inter-personal skills, and the ability to interact with subject matter experts regarding a wide range of technical and operational topics
Drive and commitment, maintaining high standards
Experience of mentoring and providing technical leadership to small teams in a design environment
Ideally, you'll also have:
Master's Degree qualified in an Engineering related field
Chartered Engineering status
