Kafel Aid is a dedicated charity based in Birmingham, UK, committed to empowering Eritrean refugees and displaced communities in East Africa (Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Djibouti) and Yemen. We achieve this through vital vocational training and microeconomic programs, equipping individuals with the skills, resources, and confidence needed to rebuild their lives and contribute to sustainable development in their host communities.

Role Overview



We are seeking an inspirational and strategic CEO to lead Kafel Aid through its next phase of growth. The ideal candidate will embody visionary leadership complemented by exceptional fundraising expertise, aiming to expand our impact, secure long-term financial sustainability, and amplify our advocacy for refugee rights.

Location

: Birmingham, United Kingdom (with occasional international travel)

Salary

: Competitive, commensurate with experience

Key Responsibilities



1. Strategic Leadership:

1. Develop and execute the organisation's strategic plan, aligning with our mission to deliver high-impact vocational training programmes.

2. Foster partnerships with governments, NGOs, and private sector stakeholders both, in the UK and internationally.

2. Fundraising & Resource Mobilisation:

1. Spearheaded innovative fundraising strategies to diversify income streams (grants, major donors, corporate partnerships, and events).

2. Cultivate relationships with institutional donors (e.g., UK Aid, EU, UN agencies) and philanthropic foundations.

3. Lead grant-writing initiatives and ensure that donor reporting complies with established standards for transparency.

3. Operational & Financial Management:

1. Oversee annual budgets, ensuring efficient resource allocation and strong financial governance.

2. Manage a remote team and in- and outside-country partners to ensure timely and effective delivery of programmes.

4. Advocacy & Visibility:

1. Serve as the public face of Kafel Aid, advocating for refugee rights in media, policy forums, and international platforms.

2. Strengthen brand awareness to attract supporters and amplify our message.

5. Governance:

1. Report to the Board of Trustees, providing regular updates on organisational performance and risk management.

Person Specification



Essential Skills/Experience:

1. Proven track record as a CEO, Director, or senior leader within the nonprofit/charity sector.

2. Demonstrated success in fundraising, particularly grants or donations.

3. Deep understanding of refugee issues, vocational training, and international development.

4. Strong financial knowledge, with experience managing complex budgets and ensuring donor compliance.

5. Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to inspire diverse audiences.

Desirable Attributes:

1. Experience working in or with organisations in the East Africa region.

2. Knowledge of UK and international funding landscapes for refugee support.

3. Existing network of contacts in philanthropy, government, or corporate social responsibility.
