Team Leader / Childcare Practitioner
to lead high-quality, child-centred care within our residential homes and education services.
About NH Care
NH Care operates five nurturing children's homes and New Horizon Academy, an independent SEN/SEMH school for 11-16-year-olds. Based in Birmingham, we support children with learning disabilities and emotional and behavioural challenges, empowering them to thrive in safe, respectful, and enriching environments.
The Role
As a key member of the care team, you'll lead shifts, supervise staff, and ensure exceptional care delivery aligned to each young person's needs. You'll promote independence, wellbeing, and life skills while fostering a culture of empathy, trust, and safety.
Key Responsibilities
Deliver and lead high-standard, child-focused care in home and community
Supervise and support staff teams during shifts
Promote health, hygiene, and emotional resilience
Facilitate leisure, educational, and life skills activities
Administer medication and assist with therapy and health plans
Safeguard children's welfare, promptly addressing concerns
Oversee behaviour management strategies including Team Teach
Maintain accurate records and uphold data protection policies
Lead and attend care planning, key working, and team meetings
Contribute to home management--rotas, financial logs, cleanliness
Liaise with families, professionals, and external stakeholders
What We're Looking For
Experience supporting children with learning disabilities or SEMH needs
Background in residential childcare and behavioural management
NVQ Level 3 in Health & Social Care (or equivalent); willingness to complete Level 5
Knowledge of Children's Home Regulations 2015 and safeguarding legislation
Proven staff supervision and mentoring skills
Strong communication skills (incl. Makaton or alternative methods)
Confidence with ICT systems or willingness to learn
Full UK driving licence and flexible to travel
Team Teach trained or willing to undertake training
Emotionally resilient, adaptable, and passionate about continuous improvement
Ability to work flexible hours including weekends, holidays, and sleep-in duties
