As a Civil Contingencies Advisor, the job may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in the office and part of the week from home. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and the location advertised will be your contractual place of work. This post may be based at various UK Met Office sites, depending on availability and suitability for the role.

Your world of expertise




The Met Office Civil Contingencies Advisors deliver a flagship service to the UK Civil Contingencies community. Working with our partners, you will deliver our highly respected support service in weather related incidents and in the development of contingency plans and risk assessments. Alongside this, work is ongoing to enhance cross-Met Office awareness and coordination of severe weather-related activity during major events.


The balance between Met Office internal tasks and external customer-facing tasks will vary depending on operational requirements.

Your key duties:



Be responsible for the provision of advice and assistance to Category 1 & 2 Responders (as defined by Civil Contingencies Act 2004) during times of severe weather and weather-related emergencies, so that they have the necessary information to mitigate any adverse impacts on people, operations and infrastructure. This will include briefing local resilience group meetings. Be responsible for raising awareness of meteorology, its impacts and Met Office civil contingencies services to Category 1 & 2 Responders and the wider emergency responder community, whilst further developing the Met Office relationship with regional and local government and the emergency services. This involves attending routine multi-agency meetings, providing presentations and attending exercises, as required. Act as a Subject Matter Expert providing advice, assistance and relevant Met Office products to the responder community during their exercising of preparation, response and recovery from severe weather and weather-related emergencies. Provide advice and assistance to the responder community in the regionalisation of risk assessments. Take part in an on-call roster, working unsociable hours at times, and be willing and able to travel for business purposes.

As our Civil Contingencies Advisor, your total reward package will be up to 58,419 annually, which includes:

41,725 base pay. An outstanding Civil Service pension, with an average employer contribution of 28.97%. Unsocial Hours On-Call Allowance for working as part of an On-Call Rota. Annual Leave starting at 27.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) rising to 32.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) after 5 years and option to buy or sell up to 5 days per year of annual leave.

Essential Criteria, skills and experience:



An

expert by nature

with proven experience in communicating across a range of media, including presentations, written and verbal briefings, to build relationships with people at all levels (both internal and external) and have the ability to influence outcomes appropriately. Comprehensive knowledge and experience of the forecasting process; the impacts weather has on civil contingencies, as well as Met Office products and services provided in preparation, response and recovery from severe weather and weather-related emergencies. Able to work

within a team but also have the ability to operate independently while following a centrally dictated line to ensure consistent messaging. You

live and breathe it

with a strong customer focus - putting the customer first and leading the delivery of high levels of customer service while managing stakeholder expectations appropriately. Highly organised with drive and resilience - the ability to deliver to tight deadlines under pressure, and to prioritise work in the face of multiple and conflicting demands on resources. A good understanding of regional and national politics, with the ability to adapt accordingly to customer sensitivities.
