An exceptional career opportunity

We're shaping the future of construction by bringing integrated expertise, innovation, deep experience, open minds and creativity to unravel the most complex problems and create exceptional, sustainable design solutions - all for a better built environment.

We are leaders in the theory and practice of Modern Methods of Construction (MMC), the Platform approach to Design for Manufacture and Assembly (P-DfMA), generative design, creative technologies, integrated design and automation in construction.

As a placement engineer, you'll have the opportunity to work in a cutting-edge and dynamic design environment, collaborating with - and learning from - the multiple disciplines across the company. Our projects range from railways to hospitals to large scale residential developments to carbon-neutral office buildings.

We're committed to helping our placement engineers thrive, offering guidance, mentorship, and hands-on experience throughout your time with us.

About the role:

As a Civil Engineer, you will be responsible for designing and modelling civil systems by working collaboratively with the many other disciplines at Bryden Wood.

You will be expected to be able to successfully manage and produce designs independently for small-medium projects, and under supervision for larger more complex projects.

Technical skills:

Good level of civil design capability including levels, underground drainage, pavements and roads, flooding, and earthworks. Good understanding of the design of below ground utilities (ducts, pipes, and chamber coordination and specification) is preferred, working knowledge and willingness to learn is essential. Experience engaging with and achieving approvals from Building Control, environment agencies, planning departments, statutory undertakers, and other relevant authorities. Experience with approval processes for sewer connections and adoptions, and works in the public highway. Ideally familiarity with UK specific S104, S106, S278 applications. Good knowledge of design codes, standards and regulations including Eurocodes, British Standards and Building Regulations. Proficiency in (and enthusiasm for) design and modelling software including AutoCAD, Civil 3D and hydraulic modelling software such as InfoDrainage. A good understanding of BIM requirements. Knowledge of Revit beneficial but not necessary. If the candidate does not have experience with Revit, a willingness to learn is essential.

Other skills:

Well organised, careful, and solutions-based approach to solving design problems. Real enthusiasm for engineering design and keen to work in a challenging design environment on both the civil and structural elements of projects. Strong analytical reasoning, critical thinking, and creativity in developing efficient engineering solutions. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a team. Able to lead engagements with stakeholders including local councils, Building Control, the Environment Agency and utility providers. Interest in emerging technologies and innovations in the construction industry. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Fluent in spoken and written English.

Experience and education:

Relevant experience of working in either a civil engineering design office with exposure to a variety of project sizes, stages and industries, this typically takes 3 - 5 years to achieve. Have a professionally accredited Civil Engineering degree with a minimum of an upper-second class with honours from a recognised institution (Master's preferred but not essential). Currently progressing towards chartership with the Institution of Civil Engineers or an equivalent institution.
