Civil Engineering Degree Apprentice
. This role combines hands-on industry experience with degree-level study at
Teesside University
, giving you the skills and qualifications needed to build a professional career in Civil Engineering.
You will gain practical experience in contract management, road marking, and highway maintenance projects for
local authorities and private clients
, while studying towards a
BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering
.
Key responsibilities
As a Degree Apprentice, you will:
Act as a key point of contact for local authority and private clients, supporting communication and project delivery.
Assist with preparing quotations, tenders, and cost estimates for road marking projects.
Plan and organise labour, materials, and equipment to deliver works safely and efficiently.
Support traffic management arrangements and ensure compliance with
highway maintenance regulations
.
Monitor projects, resolve site-based challenges, and provide progress updates.
Maintain accurate records, reports, and quality assurance documentation.
Learn to apply Civil Engineering principles -- such as surveying, materials, and project management -- in the context of highways and infrastructure.
Training and qualification
You will study for a
BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering degree
at
Teesside University (Middlesbrough campus, TS1 3BX)
, attending typically
one day per week
, with additional blended/online learning.
Training is delivered through a combination of
work-based learning and academic study
.
The apprenticeship takes
4-6 years
, followed by an End Point Assessment.
The degree is accredited by the
Joint Board of Moderators (ICE, IStructE, CIHT, IHE)
, meeting the academic requirements for
Incorporated Engineer (IEng)
and partially for
Chartered Engineer (CEng)
status.
Career progression
On completion, you will have the opportunity to progress into roles such as:
Contracts Manager
Division Lead
Specialist roles in
highways, infrastructure, or construction management
This apprenticeship provides a strong foundation for professional recognition with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and other leading bodies.
Other requirements
Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Comfortable travelling to different project sites.
Ability to work safely in live traffic environments (training provided).
Must hold, or be willing to work towards, a
full UK driving licence
.
Commitment to balancing full-time employment with degree-level study.
May be subject to a
DBS check
depending on project type (e.g. school or council work).
