Role Overview:
The Leisure Team are passionate about benefitting the local community through sports and leisure activities. We are experts in our service and pride ourselves on our customer experience and inclusivity through affordable or complementary programmes reaching those that need it the most. The leisure team want to enrich all lives within Wandsworth leading on the needs of the community, delivering programmes that reach out to local places and people, removing barriers and increasing access to activity.
To ensure all areas of the leisure facility are clean, hygienic, and well-maintained to provide a safe and pleasant environment for customers and staff.
To carry out daily and scheduled cleaning duties in line with health and safety standards and company policies.
Being flexible with shifts depending on business needs.
To work as part of the wider facility team, supporting the smooth operation of the venue and reporting any maintenance or safety issues.
Main Duties/Responsibilities:
General Cleaning Duties
Carry out routine and deep cleaning of all areas within the sports facility, including reception, corridors, changing rooms, toilets, showers, studios, gym floors, and sports halls.
Clean and sanitise high-touch surfaces (e.g., door handles, equipment, lockers) regularly to prevent the spread of germs and bacteria.
Specialist Area Cleaning
Maintain cleanliness and hygiene in wet areas such as swimming pool surrounds, saunas, steam rooms, and shower areas, using appropriate cleaning products and techniques.
Ensure safe and effective cleaning of gym equipment and fitness machines without causing damage.
Health and Safety Compliance
Adhere to all health and safety, COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health), and manual handling regulations.
Use cleaning chemicals and equipment safely and according to manufacturer guidelines and site procedures.
Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
Waste Management
Empty waste bins, recycling containers, and sanitary units regularly ensure proper disposal of waste materials.
Report any hazardous waste or bodily fluid incidents immediately and follow correct procedures for clean-up.
Stock Control and Equipment Maintenance
Monitor cleaning supplies and report low stock levels or equipment faults to the supervisor or facilities manager.
Ensure cleaning tools and equipment are used correctly, cleaned after use, and stored safely.
Incident Reporting and Communication
Report any damage, maintenance issues, or hazards (e.g., broken tiles, leaking pipes) promptly to the appropriate personnel.
Communicate effectively with team members and management to support a coordinated approach to cleanliness and safety.
Customer Service Support
Act as a visible point of contact for cleanliness-related concerns and respond politely and professionally to customer inquiries or requests.
Maintain a friendly and helpful attitude to support a positive customer experience.
Flexibility and Teamwork
Assist with cleaning during special events or peak periods, as required.
Work cooperatively with other facility staff, including maintenance, reception, and fitness teams, to uphold operational standards.
Security and Confidentiality
Ensure that all cleaning tasks are completed with consideration for customer privacy, especially in changing rooms and shower areas.
Follow procedures for accessing locked or restricted areas.
Skills and Experience:
Previous experience in a cleaning role, preferably in a public-facing or high-traffic environment (e.g. leisure center, gym, school, hospital, or office).
Understanding of basic cleaning techniques, materials, and equipment.
Awareness of health and safety practices, including COSHH regulations and safe use of cleaning chemicals.
Ability to follow cleaning schedules and instructions with attention to detail.
Physically fit and able to carry out manual tasks, including lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods.
Reliable, punctual, and self-motivated with the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
Good communication skills and a polite, professional manner when dealing with staff and members of the public.
Willingness to work flexible hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and bank holidays as required.
Experience cleaning in a sports or leisure facility (e.g. gyms, swimming pools, changing rooms).
Basic knowledge of infection control and hygiene standards in high-use areas.
Familiarity with safeguarding procedures in environments used by children and vulnerable adults.
First Aid or Health & Safety awareness training (e.g. manual handling, COSHH certification).
Ability to identify and report maintenance or safety issues effectively.
