We are seeking a dependable, experienced Cleaner to join our NHS cleaning team in supporting the delivery of safe, high-quality care through the highest standards of hygiene and environmental cleanliness. The successful candidate will play a vital role in ensuring that all areas of the premises - including clinical, non-clinical, and public spaces - are consistently cleaned, sanitised, and maintained in accordance with NHS infection prevention and control protocols.
This role requires exceptional attention to detail, a working knowledge of national cleaning standards, and a strong commitment to patient safety, professionalism, and regulatory compliance. You will be an integral member of the facilities support team, contributing to a safe and welcoming environment for patients, visitors, and healthcare professionals.
Key Responsibilities
Carry out daily and periodic cleaning duties to NHS standards in all allocated areas, including clinical rooms, waiting areas, toilets, kitchens, staff offices, and corridors.
Ensure all surfaces, fixtures, fittings, and floors are cleaned and disinfected in line with
NHS infection prevention and control policies
, with particular focus on high-touch points.
Adhere to the
National Standards of Healthcare Cleanliness 2021
, following colour-coded cleaning systems and schedules appropriate to clinical risk levels.
Accurately complete cleaning logs and documentation to provide assurance of compliance for audits and inspections (e.g. CQC, IPC).
Handle and dispose of waste (including clinical, offensive, and domestic) safely and in line with trust waste management policies.
Identify and report any environmental, hygiene, or maintenance issues promptly to facilities or line management.
Use cleaning products and equipment in accordance with
COSHH regulations
, ensuring safe storage and usage at all times.
Replenish stock levels of hygiene and cleaning materials as required, reporting low stock promptly.
Wear appropriate
PPE (personal protective equipment)
and maintain a professional, hygienic appearance at all times.
Contribute to a culture of patient safety, infection control, and team responsibility.
Maintain confidentiality and uphold NHS values in all areas of work.
Qualifications & Experience
Essential:
Minimum of 2 years' professional cleaning experience in a healthcare, care home, or similarly regulated environment
Working knowledge of infection prevention and control practices
Awareness and application of COSHH regulations
Understanding of colour-coding systems and cross-contamination risks
Ability to complete cleaning documentation and follow set cleaning schedules with minimal supervision
Good verbal communication and interpersonal skills
Physical fitness appropriate to the role (bending, standing, lifting, and use of cleaning equipment)
Commitment to NHS values, confidentiality, and patient safety
Desirable:
NVQ Level 2 in Cleaning and Support Services or equivalent
BICSc (British Institute of Cleaning Science) certification
Previous experience cleaning in an NHS or CQC-regulated environment
Familiarity with NHS audits, PLACE standards, or CQC inspection readiness
Enhanced DBS check (or willingness to undergo one)
Experience supporting deep cleans, terminal cleans, or infection outbreak control measures
