Job Description

Job Purpose:



To ensure Council buildings are clean, safe, and welcoming for staff, visitors, and the public by undertaking routine cleaning and hygiene duties.

What You'll Be Doing (Key Responsibilities):Cleaning & Maintenance



Clean offices, toilets, kitchens, public areas, and communal spaces as directed Follow approved cleaning processes and meet expected hygiene standards Replenish consumables such as soap, toilet rolls, and urinal blocks Operate and maintain cleaning equipment safely (e.g. vacuum cleaners, power washers) Use cleaning fluids and PPE correctly in line with health and safety policies Report faults or damage (e.g. vandalism, broken fixtures) promptly

Building Access & Admin



Lock and unlock buildings as needed Complete basic admin such as timesheets and job sheets

Corporate Duties



Promote positive relationships within the team and with other departments Follow Council policies and report any issues to management Support equality, health & safety, safeguarding, and data protection practices Carry out other reasonable duties as required by the Line Manager or Head of Service

Qualifications and Education



Educated to Level 1 of the Credit and Qualifications Framework for Wales or equivalent vocational experience. Hold, or be willing to obtain, the Licence to Practice qualification from the British Institute of Cleaning Science (BICS).

Knowledge and Skills



Basic administration skills with the ability to complete simple documentation. Effective communication skills, including the ability to respond to client enquiries and produce simple written reports and records. Understanding of appropriate use of cleaning chemicals, equipment, and personal protective equipment. Ability to communicate effectively in English. Ability to communicate in Welsh (desirable). Basic IT skills, including the ability to log into a computer system and navigate simple software (desirable).

Experience



Experience of working in the cleaning industry (desirable). Experience supervising a small team or providing support to additional staff (desirable). Experience dealing with clients or the public in a courteous and professional manner.

Creativity and Innovation



Ability to work in a continuous improvement environment and contribute to raising standards (desirable). Ability to identify opportunities to improve cleaning processes and procedures (desirable). Knowledge of improving resource use through modern practices in consumables and equipment.

Decision-Making and Initiative



Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Ability to identify and report or resolve basic equipment faults and issues with consumable products. Capacity to make simple decisions based on industry standards and internal procedures.

Resource Management



Demonstrated ability to use the correct equipment for the task ("right tool for the right job"). Understanding of value for money when using cleaning products and other materials.

Physical Requirements



Capable of performing manual handling duties and undertaking physically demanding work over extended periods. Willingness and ability to respond to emergency situations when required. Willingness to wear and maintain the uniform provided by the Council.
