Job Title: Clinical Coder



Location: Stepping Hill Hospital, Poplar Grove, SK2 7JE



Hours: Full Time or Part Time (Temporary)



What you'll be responsible for:



Working independently (without supervision) within all specialties.

Following defined coding processes for resolving queries on their own.

Selecting own workload to and knows when to use the internal query process to escalate more complex issues to senior members of staff or clinicians.

Is responsible for the provision of a high-quality clinical coding service. Abstracting and analysing documented medical terminology, then translating into clinical codes that can be used to give an accurate record of inpatient (Elective, Day Case and Emergency) hospital admissions.

Analysing medical terminology in terms of diagnostic and procedural information from patient documentation (The Trust's Scanning System, various clinical systems and paper case notes) in order to extract all relevant information to accurately reflect the patient's stay in hospital.

Performing advanced Clinical Coding that requires the post holder to make analytical judgements regarding a wide range of complex patient documentation and utilising clinical coding conventions.

Abstracting, analysing, translating and entering, codes based on medical information from patient records.

Dealing with enquiries; liaise with clinicians regarding coding queries.

Locating and collating missing source material e.g. missing case notes or electronic documentation, histology or data quality records.

You'll learn the following whilst working at the trust:



1. An in depth understanding of the roles and responsibilities involved in working within the NHS

2. Knowledge of the systems used, to effectively complete your role to the highest standard at all times

3. A sense of teamwork, gained through working alongside and supporting colleagues from all levels, within the organisation

You'll have the following skills/experience/qualifications:



National Clinical Coding Qualification (NCCQ) - Accredited Clinical Coder Status (ACC). Excellent knowledge and understanding of medical terminology, human anatomy and physiology. Detailed understanding of clinical coding standards ICD10 and OPCS 4. Understanding of how acute hospital services function in relation to the patient admission/transfer/discharge journey. Knowledge of the importance of confidentiality, the Data Protection Act and Caldicott Principles. Significant experience of working in clinical coding, within an acute hospital setting covering multiple specialties. Significant practical coding experience across a wide range of complex medical and surgical specialities. Experience of using both paper and electronic records to extract clinical information Working to a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail and demonstrate DSPT 'standards met' level in audits. Ability to provide coding advice and support to less experienced clinical coders. Continued profession development, including Clinical Coding Refresher course (within last 3 years). Certificate/Qualification in Anatomy and Physiology/Medical Terminology.
