Job Description

Clinical Coding Assistant x 1 (Full time 37.5hours)Strategy and Planning DirectorateClinical Coding DepartmentHull Royal Infirmary/Castle Hill HospitalBand 2PermanentClosing Date: 2 weeks after advertisementEver wondered how a hospital keeps track of everything it does - every surgery, every diagnosis, every patient treated? The answer? Clinical Coding. We're offering two exciting opportunities for enthusiastic individuals to begin their journey into the world of Clinical Coding - a vital, skilled, and rewarding career where your attention to detail and curiosity can directly impact patient care, hospital funding, and NHS services. Why Coding MattersClinical Coders are the hidden heroes of hospital life. They turn complex medical notes into national codes that tell the story of every patient's care. These codes:

  • Ensure hospitals get the correct funding for the treatments they provide
  • Help the NHS plan services and spot health trends
  • Keep patient records accurate and future-proof
When the coding is wrong, hospitals might lose money, services could be misallocated, and patient records may not tell the full story. That's why we need people who are switched-on, detail-driven, and ready to take pride in getting things right. Please note that this advertised vacancy does not meet the UKVI eligibility requirements for a Skilled Worker Visa and therefore HUTH would not be able to issue a Certificate of Sponsorship for this role.Main duties of the jobAs a Clinical Coding Assistant, you'll help support the team by:
  • Gathering and organising patient notes and discharge lists
  • Tracking down missing documentation
  • Assisting with essential admin and data entry
  • Helping ensure the right information is in place so coders can do their job accurately and efficiently
These are just the first steps in a career that's as meaningful as it is methodical. With our excellent career pathways, you won't just be supporting others, you'll be learning the ropes and building a career of your own. From day one, you'll be trained to:
  • Understand medical terminology and conditions
  • Apply national coding standards
  • Build strong analytical and investigative skills
  • Work towards a nationally recognised qualification in Clinical Coding
Better still, once you've passed your training and meet internal standards, you'll progress to a Band 3 where you'll prepare for the National Clinical Coding Exam. Pass that, and you'll advance to a Band 4 - Senior Clinical Coding Officer. This truly is a fabulous opportunity to develop your career, at your pace - knowing that we are with you every step of the way.You don't need to be a clinician - just someone with a sharp mind and a desire to make a difference. We're looking for:
  • Natural problem-solvers with great attention to detail
  • Calm, organised thinkers who enjoy learning
  • People who thrive independently but love being part of a team
  • Confidence with IT systems and a proactive attitude when chasing information
