Job Description

Applications are invited for a Clinical Fellow in Cardiac Devices at Leeds General Infirmary. This post is for 12 months and will enable the successful applicant to consolidate their cardiology training with a year of specialist training in all aspects of complex devices including extraction in a busy tertiary referral centre.
Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is a large acute NHS Trust which is responsible for a comprehensive range of healthcare services to a local population of 3 million patients. Leeds General Infirmary performs in excess of 1000 implantable device procedures per annum. Training opportunities will be tailored to the successful candidate, taking level of experience and training needs into consideration. The successful candidate will receive practical experiential training in basic and complex device procedures, leadless pacing, conduction system pacing, sub-cutaneous ICD implantation and device trouble shooting and follow up. As a high volume regional extraction centre, the successful candidate will also have opportunities to gain experience in the field of trans-venous lead extraction techniques.
In addition to lab experience and training, the successful applicant will be given opportunities to contribute to our existing research program and quality improvement projects
Main duties of the job
This post would be suitable for applicants with CCT (or within one year) in Cardiology who already have training in cardiac device implantation, but wish to increase their experience and procedural numbers. There is no General Cardiology on-call commitment.
The post would consist of a weekly commitment of 3 all day cath lab sessions which would include: assessment and evaluation of patients undergoing device procedures, performing device procedures under supervision and to be involved in post-procedure device management.
In addition there would be a weekly commitment of one heart failure clinic (focussed around complex devices), as well as opportunities to lead on clinical service development, research and the local box change MDT pathway.
The post-holder will be encouraged to attend relevant courses and meetings throughout the year as appropriate and to submit research posters or clinical cases

Job responsibilities
The candidate will be expected to provide supervised input into the care of device patients. The post would be ideally suited to those approaching or having achieved CCT (or equivalent) in cardiology with a subspecialty interest in complex devices. The role will include outpatient and inpatient management, device implantation and follow up. There will be an expectation to become involved in leading service evolution and waste reduction programmes.
The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to the departments research and clinical trials programme. A tailored training programme will be negotiated around previous experience, and professional development plans.
Whilst there is no formal commitment to out of hours work, there will be opportunities to contribute to gaps on the StR on all rota where appropriate. The applicant should be aware that this will mean only basic salary will be paid. There will be opportunities to take part in the StR on call rota if there are gaps, but this should not interfere with the day to day commitments of the fellowship post.

Essential

  • Well organised and skilled in good time management. Effective interpersonal skills. Demonstrate ability to relate to and work within a team
  • Understands principles, evidence of enthusiasm or participation, relevance of research undertaken
  • Evidence of participation in regular clinical audit/QiP
  • All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues
Desirable
  • Research experience / publications / presentations
  • Good clinical Practice trained
  • Formal teaching / training qualification or course
  • Demonstrates probity (displays honesty, integrity, aware of ethical dilemmas, respects confidentiality)
  • Meets professional health requirements (in line with GMC standards/Good Medical Practice)
Qualifications
Essential
  • MRCP(UK) or equivalent qualification
Desirable
  • Relevant higher degree or equivalent qualification.
Clinical Experience and Career Progression
Essential
  • Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in Cardiology
  • Extensive experience as an independent operator in pacemaker implantation
  • Experience in pacemaker and ICD programming
  • Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances
  • CCT in Cardiology (or evidence in the final year of training) upon taking up post or equivalent qualification
Desirable
  • Experience in complex device implantation (ICD/CRT)
  • BHRS accreditation or equivalent
Eligibility, Fitness to practice, and Language Skills
Essential
  • Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current license to practice
  • Eligible to work in the UK
  • Is up to date and fit to practice safely
