Job Description

The post is an appointment for a 24 month fixed term contract as a Clinical Fellow in Paediatric Non-Malignant Haematology at Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust.



The clinical duties of the post include the following:



The post holder's primary duty will be to take part in the haematology service, supporting the patients, experienced nursing staff and consultants in delivering a tertiary paediatric haematology service. The clinical fellow will not be based on an inpatient ward and will primarily work within the Non-Malignant service reviewing haematology outpatients and coordinating their care both within Alder Hey and at their local trusts.



Attend regular local Non Malignant Haematology MDT

Attend regular regional Non Malignant Haematology MDT for haemoglobinopathy and haemophilia

Attend consultant led non-malignant haematology in-patient ward rounds

Participate in non-malignant haematology clinics, including general haematology and specialist areas eg haemophilia and haemoglobinopathy clinics

Support review of ad hoc patients attending day care or the haematology treatment room

Perform lumbar punctures and administer IT therapy on a 1 in 8 basis as part of the theatre rota

Perform bone marrow aspirates and trephines on a 1 in 8 basis as part of the theatre rota



They will share in the day-to-day supervision of junior medical staff in the department.



They will undertake to deputise from time to time for absent colleagues and undertake to perform additional duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.

Other Duties



Organisation of elective surgical procedures

Coordination of elective procedures eg automated red cell exchange

Follow-up and review of investigations and results

Administration and correspondence related to patients



Letters and correspondence from clinics and inpatients

Regular audit

Undertaking work related to clinical governance and patient safety within the team

Teaching medical students and junior doctors

Weekend daytime working with compensatory rest days and on-call supplement (see below).



A 1 in 5 weekend ward cover with 40 hours average per week would attract a 6% weekend banding.
