Clinical Lead Nurse

Job Description

The Clinical Lead Nurse will provide clinical oversight and leadership within the service, ensuring high standards of care for children and young people with complex health needs, Autism, Learning Disabilities, and associated conditions. The post-holder will be responsible for overseeing staff competencies in clinical care tasks, supporting with care planning and risk assessments, and ensuring care documentation remains accurate and up to date.

Key Responsibilities



1. Clinical Oversight & Competency



Assess, oversee, and sign off staff competencies in delegated clinical care tasks (e.g., medication administration, gastrostomy care, epilepsy management, tracheostomy care - depending on service needs). Provide clinical advice and guidance to care teams, ensuring safe and effective practice in line with NMC standards and organisational policies. Deliver training and ongoing refresher sessions for staff on clinical skills and health-related care.

2. Care Planning & Risk Management



Support with the development, review, and updating of person-centred care plans and health action plans. Lead on clinical elements of risk assessments, ensuring risks are identified, managed, and regularly reviewed. Work in partnership with families, MDT members, and external health professionals to ensure holistic, integrated care planning.

3. Quality Assurance & Governance



Ensure all clinical documentation is accurate, up to date, and meets regulatory and professional standards. Participate in audits, governance meetings, and quality checks, contributing to service improvement. Support the Registered Manager in preparing for inspections (e.g., CQC) with a focus on clinical care.

4. Leadership & Development



Provide coaching, supervision, and clinical leadership to care teams. Act as a role model, promoting best practice and embedding a culture of safe, compassionate, and person-centred care. Support with incident reviews and debriefs, ensuring lessons are learned and improvements are implemented.

Essential Criteria



Registered Nurse (Adult, Child, or Learning Disability) with current NMC registration. Experience in supporting children/young people or adults with complex health needs, Autism, and/or Learning Disabilities. Demonstrable experience in care planning, risk assessment, and clinical governance. Strong knowledge of safeguarding, infection control, and health & safety in a care environment. Excellent communication, organisational, and leadership skills.

Desirable Criteria



Experience in training and assessing staff competencies. Previous experience in a community, residential, or educational setting. Knowledge of Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) and Trauma-Informed Care.
Job Types: Part-time, Permanent

Pay: 20.00-25.00 per hour

Expected hours: No more than 30 per week
