The West Middlesex Intensive Care Unit comprises of a combination of level 2 and level 3 intensive care beds. We care for a broad range of critically ill patients within primary nursing teams.

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced critical care nurse with a keen enthusiasm to develop others and be involved in the educational and development support of staff as a practice development Nurse Band 7



As a Band 7 PDN we would expect you:



Provide excellent education to the MDT within critical care



Coordinate and aid development of all staff within ICU



Role model excellent critical care skills



Ensure the provision of a developmental, educational and supportive environment



Demonstrate the Trust values



Be a clinical expert developing practice in line with national and international guidelines

The post holder will be a clearly identifiable senior clinica l staff member, and be able to provide excellent education to the multi-disciplinary team within critical care. They will have significant clinical experience, provide s ound clinical expertise to the ICU team, and coordina te and aid the development of all staff within critical care . They will ensure the provision of a developmental, educational and supportive environment. They will work with cross-site colleagues to develop and implement in-house training programmes in relation to critical care for all staff.



They will be a role model for expert clinical care, and lead on specific projects / management functions as delegated by the SPDN, Matron or L ead nurse.



They will role model the identified Trust values at all times . They will have a strategic role in the promotion of advanced nursing and teaching skills within the Trust .



In addition they will be activity involved in unit and trust activities and be aware of significant changes and developments in critical care. The post holder will be accountable for the delivery of development support of the staff in order to ensure a safe, effective quality service is delivered to patients and their families .

Clinical



Act as an expert practitioner and role model, assisting colleagues to develop advanced knowledge and skills in order to benefit the treatment and care of critically ill patients.



Demonstrate specialist clinical knowledge and skills at the patient's bedside



W ork clinically alongside staff requiring additional support to develop skills, expertise and knowledge to enable effective management of the critically ill patient.



To develop all staff determining proficiency based on competency frameworks



Set, monitor and maintain excellent standards of nursing care in conjunction with the multi-disciplinary team.



Maintain and role model personal contact with patients, relatives and carers, being sensitive to their need for courtesy, dignity and privacy, ensuring a safe and fr iendly environment at all times .



Maintaining timely and accurate nursing records and ensuring that confidentiality is respected.



Communicating with and assisting the multidisciplinary team to promote excellence in the delivery of care.



Monitor and audit the quality of care through a range of strategies including risk management incident reporting, complaints, research and clinical audit.



Able to scrutinise, question, evaluate and react to a multitude of complex and problematic situations, including practical, emotional and organisational aspects of patient, relative and staff management.



The post holder will undertake a minimum of 25% direct patient care within a clinical shift, role modelling to others with in the unit and maintaining clinical skills.



Deputising for SPDN as required .



Supporting and facilitating the development of critical care guidelines and protocols



Promote and maintain a safe therapeutic environment for patients, their families and staff, according to national and local Infection Control guidelines, Health & Safety legislation and Trust policies and objectives



Ensure that the team promote, ensure and adhere to the Trust safeguarding polices



Monitor quality of standards of care, in line with CQC requirements and Trust and Divisional objectives



Deliver and supervise a high quality patient experience



Promote and maintain patient safety at all times , including proactively implementing falls and pressure ulcer prevention and safe medicine management



Have an awareness of current professional and clinical developments within their area of practice and promote this to others



Leadership and management



Continue to undertake shift coordinator on clinical shift where appropriate



Ensure staff adhere to Trust protocols of care, e.g. Infection Control



Take continuing responsibility for the Ward / Department in absence of manager



Develop and maintain effective communication and working relationships with other professional groups, and staff generally within the Division and the Trust



Lead and coordinate the delivery of induction / orientation of new staff and development of new staff



Be responsible in the teaching and delivery of the Foundations of critical care programme



Act as a role model, ensuring staff work to Trust guidelines and values



Be responsible for managing and facilitating the supervision of qualified and unqualified staff and learners



Provide clinical support and guidance to staff



Act as a resource for clinical knowledge to staff



Lead and participate in recruitment and selection , and develop effective selection and interviewing skills



Support senior staff members with appraisals of staff, following training



Chair team meetings as required



Lead on specific projects, as indicated and agreed by manager



Have a working knowledge of budget arrangements for area, focussing on cost effectiveness and quality, to ensure maximum use of resource



Understand and manage local change with team members, including the embedding of new projects



Education & research



Actively support and assist in preceptorship and in pre-registration student support, supervision and guidance including mentorship where appropriate



Identify and respond to learning needs for area



Develop and deliver or organise local training sessions, mindful of the Trust values



Facilitate others in the development of informal teaching skills



Participate in the annual training needs analysis for their area



Participate in any local or related research projects, clinical trials etc.



To be involved in implementing new ideas and innovations within the ICU.



Respond to clinical incidents relating to performance/capability/education & skills



Apply and encourage others to utilise evidence based practice and relevant research findings in practice



Identify areas of nursing / midwifery research within their area that will be of benefit, and encourage and educate other staff to recognise the importance of research



Participate in clinical supervision / acting as supervisor



Support team leaders in m onitor ing and co-ordinating mandatory training requirements for critical care nursing team .

Ensure mandatory training and a satisfactory appraisal is in date



Undertake a professional development plan and demonstrate achievement of objectives



Ensure adherence to Trust policy and guidelines at all times

Communication and relationship building



Know and utilize Trust values in all working relationships to patients, corers and staff.



Demonstrate good leadership skills and ensure that communication is effective between the patient, relatives and members of the multidisciplinary team, and ensure appropriate nursing input into patient care discussions



Ensure communication is used effectively in the interests of patient care, including the use of clinical incident reporting if necessary.



Communicate handover of care in a professional manner



Demonstrate politeness, courtesy and sensitivity in dealing with patients/clients, visitors/relatives and colleagues, maintaining good customer relations and recognizing individuality and rights for each patient in line with Trust values.



Work cohesively with all members of the ward team in ensuring that the very best services to patients are provided at all times



Work effectively within a multi-racial and cultural environment



Education Team Management



Planning and allocation of new sta ff to teams and rostering in accordance to continuity , skill mix, student nurses, bank or agency staff and developmental needs of staff.



Meet with SPDN and cross-site PDN on a monthly basis



Ensuring and role-modelling e ffective handover of patient care between shifts (both coordinator and bedside staff)



Provide and facilitate clinical support and lear ning opportunities for staff , ensure that staff are aware of teaching sessions/inter team projects and attend them



Demonstrating and supporting the maintenance of a safe environment through the checking of emergency equipment, preparation of bed areas, adherence to trust policies, maintenance of equipment, reporting of clinical incidents and staff performance



Supporting team leaders with managing a team through facilitation of effective team function, promotion of team development and ensure that the team meets identified standards of care of best practice. Including:



Facilitating team days take place and are rostered and link with MDT



Supporting senior staff members in ensuring all staff have a PDR and maintain their revalidation



Supporting an environment for mutual support within the team



E nsuring good communication exists within the wider ICU team



Supporting participation of team members in inter team projects



Participating in the m onitoring and auditing the quali ty of care provided to patients



Providing support with c are planning and documentation



Reviewing and learning from Patient feedback



Completion of Mandatory updates.



Other responsibilities



Supporting other departments through expert advice and clinical support when required



Networking with the northwest London critical care network and PAN London education network



To develop ICU research based guidelines with support of colleagues.



On completion of ALS training to act as a member of the Trust Resuscitation Team



To act up in the absence of the senior practice development nurse
