Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB), formed in 2009, is the largest health organisation in Wales and provides a full range of NHS services for a population of around 694,000. BCUHB operates 3 acute general hospitals, 22 community hospitals and a network of over 90 health centres and community clinics and mental health units and coordinates the work of 96 GP practices and NHS dentists, opticians and pharmacies.
As part of Bangor University's commitment to the expansion of medical, pharmaceutical and health sciences, the North Wales Medical School (NWMS) and BCUHB seeks to appoint a dynamic individual to a post in Cancer Studies at Clinical Reader or Professorial level, depending on experience. The successful candidate will contribute to the development of cancer research, teaching and leadership within the School and BCUHB, building on the reputation of the North-West Cancer Research Institute (NWCRI) within NWMS and the North Wales Cancer Treatment Centre (NWCTC) at BCUHB.
Applicants with an excellent track record in cancer research in medical, clinical or surgical oncology are welcomed. Emphasis will be placed on applicants who complement existing cancer research and clinical practice. NWCRI has well-equipped laboratories with internationally excellent research groups studying the molecular mechanisms underpinning cancer, including cellular responses to DNA damage and impediments to genomic DNA replication. The postholder will contribute to the development and delivery of teaching within NWMS programmes with a 0.2 FTE commitment with responsibility to the Dean of Medicine.
Candidates should be medically qualified with a higher research degree and extensive research experience, including high impact publications, grant income and collaborations. The post is full-time and permanent, and the successful candidate is expected to commence as soon as practical, subject to a satisfactory Disclosure & Barring Service check. The ability to communicate through the medium of Welsh is desirable, but if applicants are not able to speak or write in Welsh, there are many opportunities to learn if they wish to do so.
This academic base will be at NWCRI at Bangor University with a clinical base at BCUHB NWCTC with duties split across the range 60:40% to 40:60% to be agreed on appointment. Through Bangor University's Dynamic Working framework, there will also be the option to spend some academic time working remotely (although remaining in the UK) to support work life balance, which will be discussed further with candidates at interview. NHS Clinical Duties will include on-call duties proportionate to the shared time allocation agreed.

North Wales Medical School
The North Wales Medical School (NWMS) is the focus for medical, biomedical teaching and research at Bangor University. The school comprises of over 90 staff, delivering a career-spanning portfolio of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes that continues to expand. These include programmes in Medicine, Biomedical and Medical Sciences, Pharmacology, Physician's Associate and, from 2025, Pharmacy MPharm, subject to General Pharmaceutical Council approval. The School's research centres are organised with partner schools within the Bangor Institute for Medical and Health Research (BIHMR), spanning medicines optimisation, primary care, clinical trials, health economics, ageing and dementia, public health and cancer biology and pharmacology.
The School's overall mission is to champion and promote excellent interprofessional medical, health and social care, research, scholarship, teaching and learning, quality and values with people who use services, practitioners, and stakeholders; to promote language and cultural competence relevant to local, national and international partners, and to provide an inclusive culture and environment for staff and students within the School.
The Project
The School's research falls within five strategically important themes, organised across four research centres, and aligned with the pillars of understanding human health, disease prevention, and treatment across the lifespan.
Clinical trials. Our UKCRC registered clinical trials unit, the North Wales Organisation for Randomised Trials in Health & Social Care (NWORTH), collaborates on and delivers clinical trials and other rigorous studies from across the UK, with particular expertise in evaluations of complex interventions. Research excellence is achieved in clinical trial design, support and delivery and quantitative evaluations that exploit health data science.
Health economics. The Centre for Health Economics and Medicines Evaluation (CHEME)'s Pharmaceutical Economics, Policy and Prescribing Research Group (PEPPER) is internationally renowned for its methodological research in economic evaluation and behavioural health economics; and applied research in the context of pharmaceuticals, health technologies and global health challenges.
Medicines-related research. The Pharmaceutical Economics, Policy and Prescribing Research Group (PEPPER) conducts world-leading research to achieve a person-centred approach to prescribing. This focuses on improving medication adherence, personalising treatment through the application of pharmacogenomics, and utilising pharmacoeconomic and pharmacoepidemiologic evaluations to achieve safer, more effective and cost-effective use of medicines.
Primary and community care. The North Wales Centre for Primary Care Research (NWCPCR) conducts internationally-leading research on the early diagnosis of cancer in primary care, and the provision of palliative care in the community. Using clinical trials and economic evaluations, specific areas of focus include general practice focussed interventions to diagnose cancer earlier, de-medicalisation of dying, role substitution and carer empowerment.
Cancer biology and pharmacology. Research undertaken at the North West Cancer Research Institute (NWCRI) focuses on the molecular mechanisms underlying cancer and translational research to improve cancer detection and treatment. Further details are provided below.

Purpose of the Job
To work in collaboration with BCUHB towards leading and conducting laboratory-based and clinical research programmes of an internationally excellent standard, with substantial evidence of quality and international peer recognition.
To maintain a portfolio of research activity including development of research proposals and management of research projects.
To gain significant funding to sustain and develop a portfolio of cancer research projects and programmes, ideally including clinical or translational studies.
Lead authorship of research in internationally significant referred journals, book chapters, monographs or other appropriate media.
To maintain and grow a world-class profile of publications in high impact peer-reviewed journals of international standing, including senior authorship of research eligible to be considered as world leading (4) or internationally excellent (3) for future Research Excellence Framework submission.
To contribute to UG or PG medical education, including a 0.2FTE contribution to the development, leadership and teaching within the NWMS UG programmes for which the postholder will be responsible to the Dean of Medicine.
To provide supervision for project and PhD students, postdoctoral scientists, and clinical fellows, and pastoral and academic support and mentoring to UG and PG students and staff.
To undertake School/College/University and Health Board leadership roles including strategic development of NWCRI as a leading centre for cancer biology and pharmacology research and BCUHB as a leading provider for cancer treatment. This will include academic leadership in facilitating, improving, and inspiring the work of colleagues and administrative duties as designated by the Dean of Medicine, and clinical leadership roles as designated by the Clinical Director of Cancer Services.
To champion collaborative research with colleagues in the School and/or across the College/University/Health board and developing links with others external to the University.
To make significant contributions to the development of research strategy and/or support and infrastructure within the School/College/University in liaison with the School's Director of Research.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
The position is a joint post between Bangor University's North Wales Medical School and Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board. The appointee will be expected to become established in an appropriate clinical attachment for a Clinical Senior Lecturer or Reader on appointment. For 40-60% of the working week, to be agreed on appointment and reviewed annually, the appointee will be expected to work in oncological clinical practice with associated clinical time in the University Health Board. The Health Board supports the requirements for continuing medical education as laid down by the Medical Royal Colleges and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities. The applicant's academic responsibilities, accounting for the remainder of their time, will be to lead, supervise and undertake substantive laboratory-based cancer research at the North-West Cancer Research Institute, part of the North Wales Medical School. The applicant will be required to comply with the policies and procedures of BCUHB and Bangor University as appropriate to their duties. This will include joint annual appraisal, job planning, audit, research and teaching.
