About the role


------------------


We are seeking to appoint a hard-working and motivated Clinical Research Fellow who will be involved in a major research project under the direction of Professor Daniel Leff at Imperial College. Professor Leff's team have a reputation for high quality/ high impact research in breast cancer surgery and have an international reputation for excellence. His teams broad research interests span early diagnosis, technology for improved precision and simulation & training, as follows


Early Diagnosis and Treatment:

working to develop flexible endoscopic robots for mammary ductoscopy, towards early detection and intervention, including the CRUK funded MAMMOBOT project.

Precision Breast Cancer Surgery

: working on either macroscopic or microscopic imaging systems and/or mass spectrometry analysis of diathermy smoke towards near real time margin evaluation. This includes prior and on-going funded projects such as CRUK funded REI-EXCISE trial of the intelligent knife, the Imperial CIC funded GLOW-I and GLOW-II trials (fluorescence guided breast surgery) and the HiCOSH trial (confocal assessment of margins).

Optimising Outcomes following Breast Cancer Surgery & Surgery for Benign Disease:

capitalising on novel technologies to evaluate outcomes following breast cancer and breast reconstruction surgery, including - the NIHR-HTA funded PRADA-II Trial, the NIHR-RfPB funded MAMMA-VAD Trial, and / or OnTrack & BRACELET studies.

Simulation Training in Breast Cancer Surgery:

including developing andvalidating novel surgical simulators for training and assessment in Breast cancer surgery

The project will be co-supervised by one of the senior members of the engineering and physical science team at Imperial College including one of either Professor Zoltan Takats (Analytical Chemistry / Mass spectrometry), Professor Daniel Elson (Cancer Imaging), Professor Ed Tate (Chemistry, Cancer Discovery), and / or Professor Alex Thompson (Cancer Imaging with Raman Spectroscopy). Many of the projects that Leff and his colleagues are leading and supported through Industrial partnerships including with Stryker (GLOW studies), Samantree (Confocal) and Waters Corp (intelligent knife).


Clinical aspects of the role

:

Clinical work will be undertaken to provide on-call/cover clinics only at the direction of the trust and as set out within the contract. The post holder will be expected to partake in a clinical role with an on call commitment of

1-in-8

which has a prospective cover, looking after general surgical patients at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. The post-holder will be expected to undertake

2 clinics per week

in the breast unit at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust., which is based at Charing Cross Hospital.



This is an excellent opportunity for individuals with an interest in breast cancer surgery and research into new systems that can improve outcomes for breast cancer patients. You must be able to demonstrate some previous experience in research and must show evidence of ability to develop personal research projects. The appointee cannot do any clinical work outside the employing organisation.


What you would be doing

During the course of the appointment the Clinical Research Fellow will undertake studies leading to a higher research degree. The appointee's research work may take place in a Department other than the Division of Surgery.



The post holder will be required to undertake a leading role in a major research project. The research project will entail project design, experimental work in addition to data analysis and reporting the results in peer-reviewed journals. Research projects will be in one of the Divisional themes including various surgical and cancer specialties, and safety and quality. The post holder will provide a 1-in-8 which has a prospective cover on-site medical cover to a nominated private patient unit at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, including working hours and antisocial hours as required. Post-holders are expected to be readily available to attend the ward, and operate on emergency cases.


Roles and Responsibilities:



Research Design and Planning

: Develop study protocols, including objectives, methodology, and timelines, and ensure compliance with regulatory and ethical standards.

Data Collection and Management

: Oversee patient recruitment and data collection, ensuring data integrity and accuracy throughout the study.

Clinical Assessments

: Conduct patient assessments, including examinations and interviews, to gather relevant clinical data.

Statistical Analysis

: Collaborate with biostatisticians to analyze data and interpret results, preparing reports for peer-reviewed publications.

Literature Review

: Stay updated with current research trends and publications related to the study, integrating relevant findings into clinical practices.

Collaboration

: Work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including physicians, nurses, and scientists, to ensure effective communication and coordination of research activities.

Patient Safety and Ethics

: Monitor patient safety throughout clinical trials and adhere to ethical standards and guidelines.

Reporting

: Prepare and present research findings to stakeholders, including submission to regulatory bodies, conferences, and peer-reviewed journals.

Mentorship

: Provide guidance to junior researchers and students involved in the research project.

Administrative Duties

: Manage budgets, timelines, and resources related to the research project while ensuring adherence to institutional policies.

What we are looking for

A degree in medicine (MBBS or equivalent) and full MRCS in surgery or MRCP in medicine equivalent is desirable, as is full General Medical Council registration and advanced Life Support training completed within six months prior to appointment.

This is a full-time post. This role is for a fixed-term contract for 3 years. There is only one positions available for this post, which has a start dates for April 2026.
