We are seeking to appoint a Clinical Research Fellow to join our multidisciplinary team delivering the National Prostate Cancer Bio-Digital Twin. The Twin will support TRANSFORM Discovery, the translational programme of the national prostate screening study TRANSFORM, funded by PCUK and NIHR in partnership with other key funding stakeholders. Our over-arching aim is to capture digital data & process biospecimen from the trial for (i) biomarker testing at scale and pace, (ii) translational & discovery science and (iii) the simulation of in silico trials to inform clinical care. The study plans to recruit up to 300,000 men and to capture associated digital and biological measures that will support cutting edge studies that will transform outcomes for men with prostate cancer across the world.
This is an unprecedented opportunity for an ambitious and Clinical Research Fellow to initiate and develop a translational PhD project using data within TRANSFORM Discovery. The post-holder will directly contribute to the establishment, development and delivery TRANSFORM Discovery to generate the essential data required for your research project under the supervision of Profs Heer and Rajan. The focus will be a human tissue-based project using digital pathology to discover fundamental biological and histological phenomena that will establish innovative approaches to prostate cancer diagnosis. Histological and molecular parameters will be correlated with key clinical measures to explore important questions about the spatial patterning of localised prostate cancer tumours and related field change at a whole gland level, in both primary and recurrent disease. These discoveries will help develop approaches to focal therapy of the prostate, including stratified approaches based on histo-molecular patterning.
What you would be doing
---------------------------
As the project is developed, appropriate collaborations (and co-supervisors) will be co-opted into the studentship. This multi-disciplinary project is ideal for a junior urologist, oncologist, or a pathologist interested in a foundation in translational biology. The successful applicant will need to work across NHS sites with surgeons in theatres and outpatients for tissue collections and pathologists to co-ordinate with pathology processing. Appropriate clinical exposure can also be built into the studentship to enhance the training tailored to your needs. There will be opportunities to gain training into wet laboratory skills, molecular histopathology, digital health technologies, AI and machine learning approaches, mathematical modelling and coding of models and processes. You will be expected to publish in discovery and high-impact clinical journal. An established track record in publication will be essential for this studentship. The studentship will form an excellent basis for those looking to develop an academic career and pursue intermediate fellowships, such as high-profile, prestigious Clinician Scientist awards (as a clinical lecturer and associate professor). Prof Heer has a record for developing and mentoring a number of top researchers in the UK and US.
What we are looking for
---------------------------
Medical degree (MBBS, MD, or equivalent) with clinical experience in urology, oncology or pathology
Registered Medical Practitioner (GMC registration) licensed to practise in the UK
Knowledge of multi-omics data integration (genomics, proteomics, metabolomics)
Background in clinical and/or basic research
What we can offer you
-------------------------
The opportunity to continue your career at a world-leading institution and be part of our mission to use science for humanity.
Benefit from a sector-leading salary and remuneration package (including 39 days' annual leave and generous pension schemes).
Access to a range of workplace benefits including a flexible working policy from day one, generous family leave packages, on-site leisure facilities and cycle-to-work scheme.
Interest-free season ticket loan schemes for travel.
Be part of a diverse, inclusive and collaborative work culture with various staff networks and resources to support your personal and professional wellbeing.
