An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 Paediatric Sister/ Charge Nurse on our Childrens Ward here at UHCW.



Ward 16 comprises of 24 beds caring for Children and Young People with a wide range of medical and surgical conditions. The area specialises in Oncology care for Children and Young People of all ages.



The Successful Candidate is required to have excellent communication skills and must be able to provide clinical leadership and support. It is expected that you will continually aim for high standards of care and support the management team. In turn, you will be supported to meet your career goals and aspirations and development within you role.

Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP.



A shift/team leader, providing clinical leadership and management support, developing and evaluating best practice within the department. The post-holder will deputise for the department manager as required.



Ward 16 is a 24 bedded unit caring for Children and Young people predominantly between the ages of 2-12. The ward specialises in Oncology care for children of all ages being a shared care centre with BCH.



The successful applicant will after training be expected to hold the Paediatric bleep supporting the unit, attending medical emergencies as well as supporting with Bed Management responsibilities.

Effectively communicate information regarding clinical decisions, policy and care pathways to patients/carers and the multi-professional team.



A skilled practitioner and clinical leader providing support to the management team, participating in service/policy development.



Assist in the audit of service delivery, communicate findings with others, and assist in ensuring that identified scope for improvement is implemented.



Designated shift Co-ordinator. Ensure appropriate support to junior team members. Management of workload on each shift, ensuring appropriate allocation of duties. Oversight for ensuring management, supervision, and support to staff to ensure coordination of clinical activities.



Responsible for clinical assessment of patients and provision of nursing interventions to maintain and improve the health and welfare of patients in all areas of the Paediatric Unit



Organisation of cross-departmental/organisational activities including HR, resource, and bleep-holder responsibilities as appropriate. This includes assisting with the operational Co-ordination of the Paediatric Unit including out of hours bed capacity management, safer staffing, and Paediatric Bleep holder responsibilities.



Demonstrate highly technical and/or practical skills to ensure optimum patient management including; complex patient monitoring; equipment management and frequent administration of invasive tests/procedures.



Develop and educate staff, participating in supervision, assessment and appraisal as required.



Utilise and ensure others utilise IT systems to secure accurate and timely patient, workforce and resource data available.



Acts as an advocate and spokesperson for the patient and families to ensure safe and effective liaison with internal and external parties, referring to service lead as required.



Manage expected and unexpected clinical events requiring varying levels of physical effort according to patient dependency/clinical need.



Support patients, carers and others during difficult situations arising in the clinical area, e.g imparting bad news or following an unexpected event.



Promote and monitor adherence to Health and Safety and Trust policy designed to protect healthcare staff and service users from known hazards.



Maintain a clean, safe environment ensuring adherence to Trust standards of cleanliness, hygiene and infection control at all times.
