Job Description

We are looking for a highly motivated, organized and dynamic individual, interested in developing their leadership, management and people development skills. An ability to ensure clinical expertise, coordinate safe, effective and high-quality care. The individual will be fully supported within the role and a full orientation and competency package offered.



The successful candidate will be expected to work closely with the Unit Manager, providing clinical leadership, support and supervision. Supporting the professional development and clinical competency of our Endoscopy workforce. You will play a key role in ensuring standards of care, patient safety and safe practice is maintained.



The successful candidate will be expected to develop knowledge and skills in maintaining a functional and effective Unit environment . It is expected they will be able to work in a fast-paced environment, acting within expected professional standards at all times.



As Clinical Sister you will have delegated responsibilities for specific areas of Endoscopy and therefore the role requires a high level of tact, diplomacy and management expertise.



As Clinical sister you will provide strong clinical leadership skills, supporting, energising, inspiring and empowering others in pursuit of a shared vision to ensure the effective management of the department.



Co-ordinating the day-to-day management of the clinical area, delegate duties and care appropriately, whilst maintaining overall responsibility.



Ensures that staffing and skill mix is maintained, at all times, to a level that does not compromise patient safety, including appropriate request, deployment and supervision of temporary staff



You will be involved in the development, assessment and implementation of guidelines, protocols and pathways



The Clinical Sister provides leadership, support and guidance to staff in monitoring the planned delivery and evaluation of individualised care



Ensure safe and effective care for complex patients requiring advanced clinical skills.

To assist and support the Matron and Unit managers in the leadership and management of the nursing team,



Provide a high-quality nursing service to patients, relatives and carers on the ward. To act as Senior Nurse for the department when necessary.



Ensure best practice in accordance with Trust policies and procedures and national Endoscopy and British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) guidelines.



Provide and maintain standards of care as required by the NMC Code of Professional Conduct.



Take a lead role in patient co-morbidity management both pre' and post-procedure.



Working collaboratively with other members of the MDT within and external to the Trust on a daily basis.



Actively manage the patient telephone assessment service, prioritising patients and ensuring patient safety and clinical needs are met



To assess and implement care of patients undergoing endoscopic procedures taking into account both physical and psychological needs.



Delegating to other nursing and support staff, as required. Always ensure that the care given is research and evidenced based.



Supervising individual patient care on a daily basis, ensuring that record observations of blood pressure, pulse, respirations, temperature, blood glucose monitoring, oxygen saturation levels and urinalysis are performed in accordance with department and T rust policy. Delegate these duties as appropriate.



To lead and teach nursing staff during all endoscopic procedures including E.R.C.P., w hilst acting at all times as the patients advocate. Ensure optimal recovery to health for the patient in accordance with endoscopy guidelines/procedures and Trust Policy.



Prepare samples for collection as required, following procedure. Delegate this if appropriate. Admit and discharge patients, preparing patients for their procedures in accordance with departmental guidelines using the Endoscopy Care Pathways.

At all times during the patient pathway, consider patient privacy and dignity.



On receipt of biopsy or investigation results bring to the timely attention of the relevant medical staff to ensure clinical treatment plans are agreed, accurately recording the information in patient medical notes

Responsible for the safe storage and ordering of all medications, ensuring that they are checked and administered in line with the Trust Medicines Management Policies.



To ensure that records are maintained in accordance with Trust policies and procedures

A dvise clerical staff on clinical issues, e.g. medication, patients with special needs (e.g. Diabetes).



To maintain a safe and therapeutic environment for patients, visitors and staff. To organise and participate in the Endoscopy Nursing On-call Service. To assist and develop health promotion and education information and facilities for patients and carers

Assist in breaking bad news and give support to patients and relatives in the unit when requested by the Endoscopists.

Participate in endoscopy JAG/GRS related audits.

Assist with the implementation of decontamination procedures of Endoscopy and Endoscopic accessories in accordance with Trust policies and national, BSG and GRS/JAG guidelines and to ensure own competence in this area. This includes the safe operation of equipment such as automated Endoscope reprocessors

Respond to quarterly and yearly test results and ensuring systems are in place to monitor decontamination competence of staff and audit of decontamination practice.



Professional



Comply with the NMC Code of Professional Practice, and within policies, procedures and guidelines. 2.2 Ensure that high standards of nursing care are given and maintained, and act when standards are not being maintained.

Clearly present the patient's point of view to others, including promoting and protecting the interests and dignity of patients.

Maintain clear, accurate and contemporaneous records in line with current NMC guidelines and standards. Act as an advocate for your patients, ensuring that any barriers to the patient's opinion and wishes being heard are challenged.

Act as mentor and role model and assess competence against set standards as requested and if appropriately qualified to do so, support development of junior staff, students and colleagues as appropriate to their needs.

Take responsibility for own continuous professional development and mandatory and statutory training, and disseminate learning and information gained to other team members in order to share good practice.

Take ownership of own annual appraisal working with appraiser to ensure one is undertaken at least annually and take responsibility for learning and development activities identified as a result of appraisal.

Proactively use information technology resources to keep up to date with current practice. Maintain up to date training in information technology (IT) skills and demonstrate a good working knowledge of confidentiality and data protection.



Management



Work as an effective and responsible team member, supporting others by demonstrating good practice including utilising mechanisms to develop and implement new ways of working including using information technology where appropriate

Day to day operational management of the Endoscopy nursing establishment including deployment of staff, rostering and management of leave.

Participate in the recruitment of nursing and administrative staff within the Endoscopy Service including short listing and interviewing candidates.

Prioritise own workload and ensure effective time-management strategies are embedded in own practice and act in a manner that promotes quality of care.

Participate in team activities that create opportunities to improve patient care.

Be responsible for patient care activities conducted by other members of staff under your supervision. Promote a professional and happy working environment conducive to high patient and staff morale.

Adhere to the organisation's policy for handling, recording and safe keeping of patient's property.

To follow the first stages of the Trust Sickness Policy, undertaking return to work interviews.

To take part in the Trust's on-call arrangements as required for GI bleed services on a 7 day rota out of hours.



Quality



To assist the Endoscopy Specialty Business Support Officer and Matron by supporting all aspects of the Clinical Governance agenda.

To assist, and in certain agreed areas, to lead upon the development, implementation and review of Endoscopy Standard Operating Procedures. Ensure staffs are aware of and abide by these procedures.

To assist the Matron in ensuring the Endoscopy Unit is at all times compliant with Infection Prevention & Control and Endoscope Decontamination standards.

U ndertake and review Risk Assessments, develop action plans and actively contribute to mitigating risk and improving quality and safety within Endoscopy.

A ctively monitor the unit's quality and act of areas of concern in conjunction with the Matron.

To support the Matron through the investigation of patient complaints in accordance with the Trust Complaints Procedure and to develop action plans to address patient concern.

To support and/or deputise for the Matron attending and actively participating in the Endoscopy User Group, Nursing Meetings, Trust Decontamination Group and any other relevant meetings as requested.

Other Key Results Areas Managing Resources 6.1 Ensure that all resources are used effectively, with the minimum of waste making recommendations where it is evident that appropriate changes may improve efficiency.

Ensure maintenance of technical, clinical and non-clinical equipment e.g. computer and printer equipment, and to respond to reports of defects.

T o support the Endoscopy Specialty Business Support Officer to achieve a balanced budget through the effective and efficient deployment of staff, purchase of consumables and regular monitoring of the Endoscopy Finance Reports.

Assist the Endoscopy Business Support Officer in the monitoring and management of endoscopy equipment maintenance and service contracts.

To be responsible for maintaining consumable stock levels.



Managing Information.



T ake personal responsibility for safeguarding and ensuring the quality of information including complying with the requirements of the Data Protection Act 1998.

Create and use records, including electronic, in a manner that complies with legislation, professional standards and organisational policies for record keeping.

F acilitate patient's access to records, adhering to policy, legislation, best practice and professional guidance. Risk Management.

Manage and assess risk within the areas of responsibility, ensuring adequate measures are in place to protect staff and patients.

Apply infection control measures within the practice according to local and national guidelines.

Report incidents, accidents and near misses or any other deviation from normal or expected practice so that appropriate action can be taken via DATIX system.

Participate in the management, review and identification of learning from patient complaints
