We have an exciting opportunity for two Clinical Teaching Fellows (Specialty Registrar/ST3+ level) in Trauma and Orthopaedics at Somerset Foundation Trust, based at the site location of Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton. These job roles are fixed term for 12 months from 6th August 2025 to 4th August 2026.


You would join our existing specialty registrar trainees and contribute to the on call rota. You should have attained MRCS or equivalent and ideally should have 18 months of training in orthopaedic surgery at CT level or above.


This post will allow the fellow to improve their experience in elective and trauma orthopaedic surgery, as well as allowing them to develop their educational portfolio in the Musgrove Park Academy fulfilling a teaching role for Bristol undergraduate students.


The successful applicant will also be encouraged to enrol on the Teaching and Learning For Health Professionals (Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education) course at the University of Bristol and this will be sponsored whilst employed at our Trust.


This is a combined clinical and teaching post; it's anticipated that the educational component will equate to 50% of your basic working hours. The educational aspects of the role will support the requirements of the Academy, working closely with the other clinical teaching fellows and the appropriate clinical leads. Time off in lieu following on call activity will come from clinical rather than teaching commitments.




Main duties, tasks & skills required

These posts ideally suited individuals who will have completed core training in orthopaedic surgery and are looking for career progression prior to applying for a national training number or an existing specialty trainee who wishes to enhance their surgical experience and education portfolio.

Time will be split 50:50 between clinical and teaching commitments, and any time off in lieu following on call will be from clinical sessions. To work 1 in 8 orthopaedic middle grade on call rota. To gain valuable experience in all aspects of acute and elective surgery. To be involved in elective & trauma theatre lists and clinics across the sub-specialties.

To facilitate the delivery of the University of Bristol undergraduate curriculum to year 3, 4 & 5 medical students at Musgrove Park Hospital.

Clinical teaching fellows (CTFs) deliver core curriculum content, act as tutors and are involved with the assessment of medical students. The post holder will be expected to act as a role model and mentor to the medical students. The post holder will help develop teaching materials. Clinical teaching fellow are expected to be able to deliver several types of teaching including induction sessions, small group tutorials, clinical-based history and examination sessions, facilitation of inter-Academy Hub sessions, Bedside teaching, Teaching clinics, Clinical reasoning skills and simulation based teaching.

The teaching programme is constantly developing and at present the main focus is on medical student years 2, 3 and 5. In summary the education duties include;

Case Based Learning facilitation, lecture based, seminar, anatomy and clinical skills teaching and SIM training. You will be expected to deliver some generic non-orthopaedic teaching (eg case based learning, pharmacology) and clinical skills Develop own teaching materials, methods and approaches with guidance eg bedside teaching. Identify learning needs of students and define appropriate learning objectives. Ensure that content, methods of delivery and learning materials will meet the defined learning objectives. Supervise the work of students, provide advice on study skills and help them with learning problems. Develop your understanding of the dynamics of group work addressing specific issues and providing assistance/guidance to both groups and individuals as necessary Be available to support specific topics, questions or concepts at request of individual students, subject to available time. Assess the work and progress of students and provide constructive feedback to students. This will also involve OSCE examinations and Long case examinations as well as assessing through case based discussion, mini-cex and DOPS. Act as a mentor for students. Take an informal role in student pastoral care such as identification of "at risk" students and dysfunctional groups, offering support and referral to appropriate sources of help. Support other clinical education fellows and mentor as appropriate. Involvement in the external student selected component (e-SSC) is encouraged and developing appropriate projects for students to complete is an expected component of the role.

The clinical duties of the post are:

On average half of the working week will be clinical, the other half devoted to teaching of Bristol medical students and educational learning, as well as working towards a Certificate in Medical Education. The weekly clinical programme will vary depending on the on-call rota and availability of other junior staff, but should broadly include: On call duties including 'post-take' ward rounds with on-call consultant, emergency theatre and reviewing new admissions. When not on call and not teaching, there will be a programme to include dedicated operating sessions, outpatient clinics, ward work and fracture clinics. You will be encouraged to participate in audit, health improvement and research projects in the department with a view to publications and presentation.
