Purpose of the role:
To be accountable for the performance of allocated teams, so that a high-quality service is delivered in line with; client contract specification; company objectives, values and performance targets. To undertake all staff management functions of allocated crews to maximise employee engagement, performance and productivity.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership and management of a team of [up to 30] employees, ensuring:
Recruitment, management and development of team are in line with good practice
A culture of inclusion, where employees are always treated with dignity and respect
Strong performance management in line with Company policy and procedures. This includes; management of absences, undertaking investigations and giving clear expectations and feedback where performance or conduct is not satisfactory.
continual monitoring of the quality and quantity of team performance by regular crew checks, crew meetings, observations and assessment. Taking remedial action where necessary.
That all staff are inducted, trained and understand all systems, processes, procedures, regulations, codes of practice and required legislation.
Strong two-way communication - regular and timely team briefings and provision of opportunities for the team to provide feedback to management.
Ensuring Health and Safety of employees, contractors and the public:
staying current with all company related health and safety policies and procedures and ensuring personal training compliance
undertaking risk assessments of responsible operations and to ensure compliance with health and safety processes, procedures, regulations and legislation at all times
promoting a strong proactive Health and Safety Culture, encouraging reporting on near misses and ensuring team learning from those
ensuring that all team members are compliant with their mandatory H&S training
thorough and timely completion of any Initial Accident Reviews
review, analysis and dissemination of H&S KPIs and reporting to the team
supporting the implementation of the new Health and Safety system and encouraging/validating appropriate use by team
Have a strong focus on vehicle compliance and driver safety:
undertaking regulate gate checks with each crew
ensuring vehicles are operated within weight limits, providing guidance on techniques and good practice
ensuring that driver hours and practices are compliant and that corrective actions are identified following any infringements
Reviewing telematic information to identify and communicate where driver safety can be improved
Making sure resource availability supports required levels of service provision:
To monitor and plan staffing levels so that adequate cover is always maintained, taking into account absences and busy periods
To ensure adequate vehicle provision, resolving truck break downs of allocated crews
To engage positively with BWC colleagues, Bristol City Council as well as other partners and community groups
To ensure sufficient time allocated to support own learning and development in relation to leadership and good management practices
Essential Requirements for the Role:
Knowledge of a logistics and/or waste management industry
Understanding of transport management and fleet compliance
Good written and verbal skills with the ability to compose letters and reports
Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills
Assertive management style with the ability to conduct review meetings, investigation meetings and to undertake difficult conversations, where performance or conduct is not satisfactory
Experience of leading and managing an operational team
The ability to take ownership of challenging problems and to apply innovative solutions
Able to use word processing systems and basic spreadsheets
Holding a full driving licence, valid for use in the UK
