An exciting opportunity to join our team of clinicians, and advanced clinical practitioners has arisen. We are seeking a highly motivated Surgical Care Practitioner in Colorectal Surgery to join a cohesive group of Consultant Surgeons and resident doctors to deliver high quality care to the Trust and its patients.



The role of Colorectal SCP involves playing a key part in the wider Colorectal service. We are looking for a dynamic and enthusiastic SCP who can work with multiple professional teams, to ensure the patient's journey is optimised.



Alongside proven clinical abilities, the post holder will need excellent communication skills and be able to competently and accurately action recommendations for patients from wider teams. The successful applicant will work within a team of supportive colleges from varying professional backgrounds at multiple sites across the county.



The post holder will act as a patient advocate to ensure that patient concerns and needs are heard and acted upon.

Successful applicants must provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP.



The Practitioner will receive training to run Colorectal Clinics independently with on-site support. Administration time has been built into the Job Plan. The post holder will support the team in ward rounds. The post holder will support the Consultant Surgeons in theatres with delegated consent, patient positioning, first assisting and discharge summaries. The post holder will also be expected to train junior residents.

Undertake advanced practitioner-level holistic assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patients' care needs pre, intra and postoperatively

Undertake initial assessment to determine differential diagnoses, utilising advanced critical-thinking and decision-making skills, deciding the appropriate investigations and when necessary, to refer to senior medical colleagues.

On a daily basis, act autonomously to provide expert clinical/technical care, which contributes to the diagnosis, specialist care and treatment plans for these highly complex patients.

In the absence of medical staff and within predetermined parameters, using advanced clinical-reasoning skills the post holder will initiate treatment plans and support to ensure the ongoing safety of the patient.

Demonstrate continual evaluation of practice within the defined specialist area and take responsibility for making agreed changes where appropriate.

Proactively initiate treatment plans for patients requiring urgent intervention including fluid resuscitation, oxygen therapy, antibiotics or other urgent treatment.

Undertake procedures such as cannulation, venepuncture, arterial blood gases to facilitate efficient urgent care in the context of acute illness or sudden deterioration.

Initiate relevant investigations such as X-ray, Ultrasound, ECG and blood tests to enable timely diagnosis and facilitate early decision making, interpreting and reporting findings to appropriate clinicians within scope of practice and following UHCW protocols and guidance.

Prescribe and review medication, appropriate to patient needs in the context of acute illness, taking into account any treatment given previously for pre-existing medical conditions, providing information and advice to patients on prescribed medication regimens, side-effects and interactions, within agreed prescribing formulary.

Discuss and agree assessment outcomes with patients, carers and other healthcare professionals, to enable them to make informed decisions regarding treatment.

Authorise the decision to admit patients and/or proactively initiate discharge.

Ensure that accurate, essential and appropriate written and verbal information is relayed to staff, ensuring adequate facilities are in place to maintain safety in the environment, ensuring effective management of this group of patients.

Ensure that patients are referred to appropriate practitioner when needs and risks are not within own scope of practice.

Ensure dignity, privacy, and cultural and religious beliefs are respected at all times

Co-ordinate the care of colorectal surgery patients throughout the care pathway with the multidisciplinary team and clinical services to ensure the effective management of this group of patients.

Undertake delegated consent for named procedures, following appropriate training and completion of competency.

Undertake duties commemorate with the role of Surgical Care Practitioner (SCP) and local protocols such as first surgical assisting, suturing, deep retraction and undertaking surgical interventions, dependent upon successful completion of competencies.
