About our Team:
  • The Books Editorial team commissions and develops a wide range of texts and online resources across the social sciences and vocational areas.
  • The new Commissioning Editor role is in our Business & Management team.
  • The successful candidate will be working alongside other Senior Commissioning Editors and a Publisher and focusing on textbooks for undergraduate students.
  • The new Commissioning Editor will also work closely with colleagues in the sales, marketing, production and design teams.
  • As a team, we are committed to commissioning great content and pedagogy that supports teaching and learning and contributes to the development of knowledge in the disciplines we cover.
  • We pride ourselves on providing an excellent publishing service to our authors, nurturing their talent, and optimising the sales and impact of their books.

  • Able to assess opportunities for publishing new books and new editions
  • Confident in creating positive, engaged working relationships that get the most out of authors
  • Able to make sound commercial decisions that impact positively on product development and profitability.
  • Effective at collaborating with internal colleagues to achieve project goals and strategic objectives.
  • Able to show excellent organizational and prioritization skills, with the ability to delegate effectively.
  • Able to negotiate successfully and efficiently with stakeholders
  • Knowledgeable of the academic market or a demonstrable interest in gaining this knowledge.

Your new role:
  • You will commission authors to write new books and new editions, working to a hitlist and targets.
  • Manage multiple projects at different stages of the writing and publishing process to deadlines and to plan.
  • Make commercial decisions, manage costs, and analyse sales and financial data.
  • Establish and maintain mutually beneficial relationships with authors.
  • Collaborate effectively with colleagues over the production, design, marketing and selling of the books you work on.
  • Develop a deep knowledge of the market and share this with colleagues.
  • Actively contribute to a positive team culture where everyone feels welcome and included and where we strive for continuous improvement.
  • Work closely and collaboratively with an Editorial Assistant/Assistant Editor.
