Job Description

Job Summary



The Communications Officer will lead the development and delivery of effective communication strategies, supporting the organisation's outreach and engagement efforts. They will manage content across multiple platforms, ensuring clear, consistent, and impactful messaging to members, stakeholders, and the wider public.

This role is 17.5 hours of work per week, worked flexibly over 2 or 2.5 days per week. The post-holder may either work in our office in Kyle of Localsh or remotely but should be based in Scotland as they will be expected to travel to attend some meetings with SCF, SG, agencies, other NGOs and crofters.

Full time annual salary of 32,000 (PTE 16,000 per annum). Employees also receive enhanced holiday of 35 days paid leave per annum, statutory pension and an enhanced sickness leave provision.

Main Duties to include:



Magazine Production (Crofter - published three times a year)



Collaborate with the working group to define themes for upcoming issues.

Identify and contact contributors, ensuring timely submission of articles.

Provide editorial guidance and support to contributors as needed.

Write original articles that align with the magazine's themes and objectives.

Coordinate advertisement procurement with office staff, managing placement logistics.

Develop a structured article list, incorporating relevant graphics for layout.

Copy-edit and proofread all submitted materials to ensure clarity, accuracy, and consistency.

Liaise with the printing team, ensuring production schedules and quality standards are met.

Oversee final magazine distribution and visibility strategies

Social Media Management



Develop and implement a comprehensive content strategy tailored to audience engagement.

Create visually appealing and compelling posts and ads across Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and potentially other channels.

Schedule and publish regular content updates, maintaining an active online presence.

Monitor engagement metrics, adapting strategies based on audience feedback and trends.

Design and execute targeted social media campaigns to promote key initiatives and events.

Respond to comments, messages, and interactions to foster engagement and community-building.

E-Newsletter (Member Newsletter - Monthly)



Source and collate relevant content from staff and external contributors.

Draft engaging articles and news updates tailored for members.

Design newsletters with branding consistency, ensuring readability and accessibility.

Distribute newsletters (currently through Mailchimp) and monitor engagement metrics for insights.

Press and Public Relations



Draft press releases in collaboration with internal teams to highlight major updates, events, and initiatives.

Ensure all press materials are professionally written and aligned with organisational messaging.

Identify key media contacts and outlets for targeted press distribution.

Manage relationships with journalists and respond to press inquiries as needed.

Track media coverage and compile reports on public engagement.

Person Specification



Education:



Educated to at least National 5 level.

Higher or Advanced Higher qualifications in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or Marketing would be advantageous.

Degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing, or a related field would also be advantageous but not essential.

Experience:



Minimum of 2 years of experience in a communications, marketing, or journalism role.

Experience in magazine production, including content planning, editing, and liaising with printers.

Proven track record in social media management, including content creation, scheduling, and campaign execution.

Experience drafting and distributing press releases, with strong media relations skills.

Knowledge of desktop publishing software (e.g., Canva, Photoshop) for content design.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office, content management systems, and digital marketing tools.

Agricultural or crofting knowledge is highly desirable, with experience in rural or farming communications being an advantage.

Skills:



Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to tailor messaging for different audiences.

Strong copywriting, editing, and proofreading abilities, ensuring clarity and accuracy in all content.

Ability to manage multiple deadlines and projects efficiently, demonstrating excellent time management.

Creativity in content development and campaign execution, with a flair for engaging storytelling.

Understanding of crisis communications, with the ability to respond effectively to urgent situations.

Proficiency in social media analytics, using insights to refine strategies and improve engagement.

Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships with contributors, advertisers, and media professionals.

Adaptability and problem-solving abilities, ensuring flexibility in a fast-paced communications environment.
