About the role
We are seeking a proactive and organised Community Manager to support and expand a global open-source community focused on decentralised web technologies. This role bridges the technical, organisational, and interpersonal aspects of the project, working closely with community leaders, technical editors, governance groups, and contributors to create a vibrant, inclusive, and productive collaborative environment. This is a high-impact opportunity for someone passionate about facilitating cross-community dialogue, organising events, moderating communication channels, and ensuring transparency within complex technical ecosystems.
Key responsibilities
Outreach, engagement and onboarding for stakeholders in the Solid community including building, deploying and using the technology - including proactive efforts to support diverse engagement in the Solid community.
Create feedback loops between the community and internal ODI teams.
Own community engagement strategy across digital platforms and in-person events (hackathons, symposiums, email campaigns, webinars, social channels).
Schedule and facilitate internal and external meetings - including specification meetings, governance meetings and advisory committees
Coordinate and support community-led alignment on open specifications.
Document key decisions and ensure continuity between contributors and leadership.
Facilitate collaboration between the solid community and adjacent technical communities, ecosystems and standards groups including: other W3C groups, Dataspaces, Personal Data Store Solutions, Fediverse & Social Web communities, and Digital Identity Standards.
Maintain and promote a catalogue of current Solid deployments, tools, and use cases and related organisations.
Contribute to outreach efforts targeting adopters, developers, and ecosystem partners.
Coordinate and promote recurring community events and innovation challenges (e.g., monthly showcases, annual symposiums and/or collaborative hackathons.
Engage with related ecosystems to ensure visibility and presence at key external events.
Help consolidate communication infrastructure and make channels more accessible to contributors.
Improve accessibility and usability of community communication platforms.
Enforce clear terms of reference across community channels (forums, chat, mailing lists, etc.).
Manage access and roles across collaboration tools (e.g., GitHub, shared credentials, mailing systems).
Support business development and fundraising activities.
Key skills and competencies
Proven experience managing open-source communities and projects.
Technical literacy in web technologies, open-source licensing, or collaborative software development processes.
Demonstrated ability to engage and foster relationships across diverse stakeholder groups.
Demonstrable experience in business development, including identifying opportunities, winning new client engagements, and managing commercial relationships.
Extensive experience organising events, such as industry conferences, challenge prizes, or competitive hackathons.
Confident networking skills with a proven track record of building long-term relationships with new partners.
Expert communicator, skilled in drafting persuasive proposals and delivering compelling presentations, pitches, and talks.
Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple workstreams.
Experience with collaborative tools such as GitHub, Matrix/Discord/Slack, Google Workspace, etc.
Comfortable with open and transparent communication practices.
Ability to work independently and manage communication across time zones.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
Desirable experience
Familiarity with decentralised web technologies, data governance, or open standards.
Experience contributing to or leading moderation efforts in online communities.
Prior involvement with community governance or technical working groups.
Awareness of best practices for community health, inclusivity, and accessibility.
