Job Description

This is a fixed term/secondment vacancy until 30/09/2026 to cover secondment.

Hywel Dda University Health Board's School Nursing Team are looking for an experienced Band 5 Registered Staff Nurse to join their Carmarthenshire Team.



The post is Fixed Term for 1 year, working 37.5 hours per week full time all year round.



School Nurses are central to a range of services that promote the public health agenda and support the physical, emotional and social health of children and young people aged between 5 to 18 years.



The successful candidate will need excellent communication skills, be able to demonstrate their ability to work as an autonomous practitioner and within a team environment in line with the NMC code of professional conduct.



The School Nursing service are keen to support any ongoing professional development in order for the successful candidate to apply for the role of SCPHN School Nurse should they be interested.



Assist in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care of school-aged children and maintaining accurate records.



Maintain good communication with school staff, professional colleagues, school children and relatives.



Maintain and update clinical knowledge and, where appropriate, advise and guide others including students and teachers.



Be involved in health education of school aged children and school staff appropriate to individual schools eg delivering growing up talks and sexual health education.



Be aware of child protection guidance/policy issues and the need for effective and robust documentation and communication in line with child safeguarding procedures.



Participate in school immunisation programmes, administering vaccines to children and young people and collating consent forms returned by parents.



Develop and sustain a working relationship with named schools, children, young people and where appropriate their families.



Prioritise workload to minimise risk to vulnerable children and maximise equality of health for all.



Complete review Health Assessments for Looked After Children as delegated by responsible School Nurse.



Respond to Accident and Emergency attendance notifications in line with Health Boards (HB) policy which at present prioritises child protection or other vulnerable children in school.



The ability to speak Welsh is essential for this post.



Hywel Dda University Health Board plans and provides NHS healthcare services for people living in Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire, and bordering counties.

Bronglais Hospital in Aberystwyth; Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen; Prince Philip Hospital in Llanelli; and Withybush Hospital in Haverfordwest



Five community hospitals:

Amman Valley and Llandovery hospitals in Carmarthenshire; Tregaron Hospital in Ceredigion; and Tenby and South Pembrokeshire hospitals in Pembrokeshire



Two integrated care centres:

Aberaeron and Cardigan in Ceredigion, and several other community settings



47 general practices (six of which are health board managed practices); dental practices (including four orthodontic); 97 community pharmacies; 43 general ophthalmic practices; and 8 ophthalmic domiciliary providers



Numerous mental health and learning disabilities services
