We welcome applications for candidates who want to work as part of the Smokefree Team at South London and Maudsley . The advertised role is based at The Pier Road Project, a community drug and alcohol advice and treatment service for adults living in the London Borough of Bexley.



This role provides an exciting, new, development opportunity to support people who are accessing treatment via The Pier Road Project and who are identified as tobacco dependent, to cut down and quit smoking! This is a new service, and there is lots of scope foA`r the successful candidate to help shape and inform how to provide the best route to care for people that are referred.

The primary role of the successful candidate will be to deliver tobacco dependence treatment to people who are referred. This will include face-to-face appointments (in clinic at The Pier Road Project, and potentially home visits or visits in the community), as well as telephone consultations. Treatment will include Nicotine Replacement Therapies (NRT), Vapes, and stop smoking medications (cytisine and varenicline), as well as frequent opportunities for motivational and behavioural support.



All treatment will and engagement will need to be recorded, and the successful candidate will participate and contribute to frequent data review / audit, to inform further development of this new service and be able to provide assurance to the Local Authority who are funding this work.

In this role you will be able to work 15 hours flexibly, Monday to Friday in the time frames from 8:00 to 5:00 giving you the very best of good work life balance.



The Smokefree Team is located across all four main hospital sites and Lorraine Hewitt House (an addictions advice and treatment service in Lambeth). Despite working in separate locations, the team meet at least on a monthly basis for business update meetings and additional clinical supervision (with external support provided by clinical-academics working in the nicotine research group at King's College London). In addition, the team work collaboratively on a range of programme wide improvement and implementation projects. They team are locally line-managed within their corresponding directorates, with additional support and input from the Smokefree Team Lead and the Smokefree & Healthy Hospital Programme Lead.



Each hospital site in unique and the individual members of the Smokefree Team are proactive in addressing localised challenges. In addition, each member of the team is involved in research activity and is committed to delivering evidence-based care. Communication is a core component of the Smokefree Programme strategy, and the team also participate and contribute in local, Trust-wide, and occasionally national efforts to update clinical colleagues and the wider hospital communities with updates on progress and care.



1. Treatment Provision



Deliver evidence-based tobacco dependence treatment through one-to-one, group, and drop-in sessions.

Carry out comprehensive assessments and recommend appropriate stop smoking medications or alternatives (e.g., vapes).

Work flexibly across multiple sites, including patient accommodation, using digital tools like text messaging to enhance support.

Collaborate with clinical teams, carers, and families to tailor treatment plans.

Maintain safe use and stock control of treatment equipment, especially vapes.



2. Service Development



Contribute to the implementation and success of SLaM's Smokefree Policy and strategic goals to reduce smoking.

Collect and manage service data to support evaluation and improvement.

Act as a resource for staff, offering guidance and signposting where needed.

Support research initiatives and help recruit participants for smokefree-related studies.



3. Leadership and Supervision



Serve as a role model and ambassador for the Smokefree Programme.

Share best practices and attend regular supervision and training.

Support the development of colleagues and promote smoking cessation training.



4. Communication



Engage regularly with a wide range of stakeholders including patients, carers, nursing and medical staff, service managers, and researchers.

Maintain clear, respectful, and inclusive communication across all interactions.

Participate in training, supervision, and professional networks.
