We are recruiting for an Industrial Placement Student in IT Support to join the Science and Technology Facilities Council's (STFC) Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Harwell, Oxfordshire. ICT is essential to the science that we support, and we are looking for a motivated student to help us maintain and develop the IT systems that keep STFC running.


The RAL Space IT Helpdesk is part of the wider IT Services team, providing support and infrastructure for the RAL Space department as well as the broader STFC organisation. We are a friendly, collaborative team that places a strong emphasis on teamwork, high-quality service, and customer satisfaction.


As part of the team, you will contribute to supporting the research and development activities within the Space sector, giving you valuable insight into the cutting-edge work carried out at RAL Space and the chance to learn more about this exciting field.

About the role and a summary of key duties & responsibilities



You will be based in the RAL Space department alongside experienced IT professionals. This placement will give you the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a busy IT environment, supporting the exciting and innovative field of Space Science.


Your primary role will be within the IT Helpdesk team, dealing with a wide range of support requests and gaining insight into the work carried out across the department. This placement is an excellent opportunity to develop practical skills and broaden your knowledge while working in a supportive team.


We are looking for a student with excellent interpersonal skills, strong teamwork abilities and a proactive approach to problem solving. Some existing knowledge of IT would be an advantage but is not essential -- enthusiasm and a willingness to learn are key.


Deliver first line support to our users in person, by phone and by email. Utilise our ticketing system to investigate software, hardware and networking issues. Install or upgrade PCs and laptops. Support new starters. Provide general assistance for Windows/Mac/mobile devices/printers. Participate in a variety of IT projects

Essential:



Currently enrolled on an undergraduate degree course and returning to university/studies to complete your undergraduate degree following the placement (S) Are required or have requested to take an industrial placement year (S) Have the right to live and work in the UK for the duration of the placement (S) Able to commence employment in summer 2026 (S) Excellent communication skills, as demonstrated in your CV, covering letter and interview Demonstrable knowledge of - or enthusiasm for - various aspects of computing. Your CV and cover letter should give example(s) of any personal, school or work-based projects that involved learning about and using IT and/or hardware, and what you enjoyed Some knowledge of PC/Mac computer hardware Some knowledge of Microsoft Desktop Products

Desirable:



Some knowledge of Apple products Some knowledge of Smartphones
