self-employed

Conservation Brick and Flint Layer to join our team on a subcontract basis.

?This role is not for standard new-build construction. It requires an advanced understanding of historic building pathology and absolute dedication to conservation principles. The work demands specialist

judgement

and meticulous attention to detail to maintain the authenticity and integrity of cherished architectural heritage.

Key Responsibilities



?Execute conservation-grade brickwork and masonry repairs on listed and period properties. ?Specialise in the laying and repair of traditional Suffolk flint work, including galleting and knapped flint panels. ?Working confidently with natural hydraulic lime (NHL) and non-hydraulic lime mortars for pointing and bedding. ?Undertake lime-based repointing using traditional profiles and techniques (e.g., flush, tuck). ?Conduct structural and cosmetic repairs to historic brick bonds (e.g., English, Flemish). ?Working collaboratively with the core team, often in coordination with other specialist trades. ?Maintaining exceptional site cleanliness and adherence to conservation standards and site safety.

Essential Requirements



?

Self-Employed Status:

You must be legally operating as a self-employed individual/business (CIS registered). ?

Specialist Experience:

Extensive, verifiable experience as a brick and flint layer, specifically within the historic building or conservation sector. ?

Lime Knowledge:

A robust and practical understanding of lime mortars, including mix ratios, curing times, and seasonal limitations. ?

Logistics:

Must possess

own transport

Tools:

Must supply all necessary specialist tools, equipment, and personal protective gear required for conservation masonry

Reliability:

Proven record of punctuality, dependability, and the ability to manage workloads and deadlines effectively.

Location & Travel



?The work will be undertaken on various sites within approximately 45 minutes of Barningham, Suffolk. Candidates must be prepared for daily travel within this working radius across Suffolk and bordering Norfolk.
