The role involves analyzing drawings, specifications, and tender documents, liaising with suppliers and subcontractors, and producing detailed cost breakdowns.
Key Responsibilities
Tender & Estimating
Prepare detailed and accurate cost estimates for building and architectural projects
Review architectural drawings, specifications, and tender documents to identify scope, risks, and costs
Obtain and evaluate subcontractor and supplier quotations
Prepare bills of quantities, cost plans, and pricing schedules
Commercial Analysis
Analyse project costs to ensure alignment with budget and company profitability targets
Identify cost-saving opportunities without compromising quality or compliance
Assess variations and potential claims from a cost perspective
Collaboration & Communication
Liaise with design teams, project managers, and clients to clarify project requirements
Present cost proposals and participate in tender review meetings
Support procurement by providing accurate cost information
Compliance & Documentation
Ensure estimates comply with contract standards, legal requirements, and company procedures
Maintain organized records of tenders, supplier quotes, and cost data
Support post-tender negotiations and contract award processes
Qualifications & Experience
Degree or HND in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related discipline
Minimum
3-5 years' experience
as an Estimator in the construction industry
Experience with
UK standard contracts
(JCT, NEC, or FIDIC) preferred
Proficiency with estimating software (e.g., CostX, BuildSoft, Bluebeam) and MS Office
Skills & Competencies
Strong numerical and analytical skills
Attention to detail and accuracy in estimating
Excellent communication and negotiation skills
Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines
Knowledge of construction methods, materials, and labor costs in the UK market
Desirable
Membership or working toward
RICS or CIOB
Experience in both
public and private sector projects
Knowledge of Health & Safety requirements on UK construction sites
Working Conditions
Office-based in Solihull with occasional site visits
May require travel to project sites across the West Midlands
