Introduction
Do you enjoy practical tasks and want to use your hands-on skills to make a difference in young people's lives? Would you like to support learners as they develop their confidence and prepare for working life in construction and beyond?
We're looking for a Construction Learning Support Assistant (LSA) who can work alongside tutors to help young people aged 15-25 learn practical construction skills such as carpentry, tiling, decorating, and basic plumbing. Many of our learners haven't thrived in school and need encouragement, patience, and belief as they take a second chance at learning.
You might have experience in construction or a trade, or you may have previously supported young people in education or care settings. Either way, if you have the empathy and resilience to build relationships and keep learners engaged in practical, hands-on work, we'd love to hear from you.
At New Meaning Training, we support learners who face a variety of challenges, including autism, ADHD, anxiety, attachment disorders, and other social-emotional or learning needs. Many have Education Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) and need personalised support to overcome barriers and move toward employment or further training.
This is an ideal role for someone who wants to help young people succeed, whether you're starting out in education or bringing valuable life or trade experience to a new setting.
Key Responsibilities
Work alongside Construction Tutors to support learners in practical, hands-on sessions
Monitor and follow thorough adherence to Health & Safety protocols
Provide one-to-one or small-group support in construction-based activities
Help adjust and adapt lesson activities for learners with additional needs
Run interventions or support strategies outlined in learner EHCPs
Promote learners' social, emotional, and behavioural development
Deescalate challenging situations calmly and positively
Support learners with Maths, English, and Employability Skills as part of their wider programme
Encourage attendance, engagement, and effort as key drivers of progress
Maintain safeguarding awareness and follow all relevant NMT procedures
Contribute to team ideas for engaging learners who are hard to reach
Support delivery of activities that promote independence and workplace readiness
About Us
New Meaning Training (NMT) offers education with a difference. We are an alternative education provider dedicated to helping young people aged 15-25 discover their strengths and develop the confidence and skills to earn their own living.
For the 2025-2026 academic year, around 300 young people from Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, Warwickshire, West Midlands, and Berkshire will join one of our programmes. Many of these students are referred by secondary schools, pupil referral units, and Special Education Needs settings.
Our journey began in 2015 with the opening of our first centre in High Wycombe, originally known as "Toolshed." Ten years on, NMT continues to grow, with new centres planned for Nuneaton and Milton Keynes in September 2025.
Our NMT Warwickshire centres offer five learning programmes: Construction Multiskills, Motor Mechanics, Creative Art & Design, Sports and Computing. They incorporate functional skills qualifications in Maths and English, along with tutorials to support our well-rounded approach. We also provide a 'Transition Support' programme for young people with EHCPs who are not yet ready for a learning setting.
NMT tailors its programmes to meet the needs of its learners, considering Special Education Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. We comprehensively apply the principles of a Loving Care Approach (Trauma Informed Practice) to ensure all young people receive the support they need to thrive.
You will have:
An interest or background in construction, practical skills, or trade-related work
The ability to build positive, respectful relationships with young people
Empathy, patience, and a non-judgemental approach
A proactive, team-working attitude with strong communication skills
An understanding of (or willingness to learn about) learning differences, EHCPs, and trauma-informed practice
Professionalism when working with learners, parents, and external stakeholders
Good organisation and flexibility to respond to day-to-day needs
Creativity and curiosity in supporting young people to succeed in their own way
Safeguarding and Additional Notes
NMT is committed to safeguarding all learners. All successful candidates will be required to undergo an Enhanced DBS check. Further information is available at www.gov.uk.
