Job Description

National Testing Services Ltd is a niche provider of specialist testing services serving the civil engineering, construction, and infrastructure industries. We are looking for enthusiastic and dependable Technicians/Trainees to join our highway materials team in Malpas, Cheshire, SY14 8LU.

This is an entry level position and relevant experience in a similar role in the industry is NOT essential, although we welcome applications from time served candidates. This is a training role, and we are keen to hear from candidates who are enthusiastic and can learn new skills quickly.

The Role:



This is not a position where you will wear a white lab coat.

Experience is not essential, as full training is to be provided.

We are looking for candidates who are hands-on, and don't mind getting dusty and dirty. You will also be organised, self-motivated, hardworking, have a good eye for detail and like working as part of a busy team.

Work involves handling, inspecting, and testing of road construction materials including asphalts, concrete, aggregate and soils. There will be some manual handling involved in the role full and ongoing training provided.

This position also comes with the requirement to support our on-site Lead Technicians as a Labourer to cover annual leave and busy periods.

Work supporting the Lead Technician involves staying away 4 or 5 nights a week. All accommodation (individual rooms) and meals are paid for by the company. Flexibility in hours is required to ensure work requirements and contract deadlines are met and will include working outside in all weathers.

Duties to include, but not limited to:



Highway core sample logging Utility core sample logging
Sample preparation methods

Cutting of road core samples using a table saw

Crushing samples using an automatic jaw crusher

Sample grading using sieves

Sample reduction using riffle boxes and laboratory balance

Packaging of samples to ensure safe transport and storage

Returning samples to the correct storage area

Maintaining a neat, safe, and orderly working environment

Correct disposal of samples

Loading and unloading of materials

Understand specific testing instructions, completing and reporting work to the office, as required. Carry out routine maintenance on plant and equipment and report all defects, as instructed. Provide effective input to projects consistent with your skills and experience. Accept further training, subject to suitability. Flexibility to work extra hours when workload requires. Report to the Senior Lab Technician/Section Manager and carry out their instructions.

Essential - Qualifications, Skills & Experience -



arHHEducated to GCSE level or equivalent in Maths, English and/or Science subjects

Hardworking and self-motivated with a positive "can-do" attitude. Ability to accept instructions and work to specified procedures. Able to pre-empt problems and constructively tackle obstacles. Maintain accurate and legible records. Organised and motivated. UK Diving Licence with less than 6 points.

Desirable - Qualifications, Skills & Experience



Held a previous position doing manual and/or technical work. First Aid Training and awareness of Health & Safety. Experience of driving a van and towing a trailer. Experience of working in safety critical environment e.g., highways, traffic management or construction. CSCS card

What we offer:



Starting salary - 26,191.03, rising to 27,574.26 after successful completion of probation period.

A daily supplement of 15 per day when working on-site and a 25 food allowance for each night away from home.

Duration - Permanent, Full time

Laboratory working hours - 07:00 to15:30 or 06:00-14:30 (40 hours per week) Monday to Friday.

Site working hours - 9-hour shifts (45 hours per week)
