Job Description

The Construction Project Manager at London City Airport will lead strategically important, interconnected projects within a live airport environment, focusing on technical, commercial, and financial management to ensure timely and budgeted delivery. They will support the Head of Projects by developing detailed plans, managing project finances and resources, selecting and coordinating subcontractors, and overseeing the technical execution of a variety of multi-disciplinary projects to achieve sustainable growth for the airport.
Main Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage the projects through the design, procurement, construction, delivery, and handover stages to achieve desired business outcomes.
  • Drive our project teams and associated contractors to deliver the highest levels of health, safety and environmental performance achievable. Coordinate and delivery regular safety engagement across all projects.
  • Review contractor Construction, Design & Management (CDM) and Health, Safety & Environmental submittals (including construction phase plans, risk assessments, method statements and work permits) and monitor compliance against accepted plans.
  • Identify and mitigate risks that may adversely impact project delivery or present the potential for airport operational disruption.
  • Deliver the assigned projects to agreed cost, schedule, and quality requirements, leading the successful handover of assigned projects to the Airport Operations Departments including ensuring all requisite AOR and Handover planning and activities are in place.
  • Set standards, manage, motivate, coach and mentor staff within the project teams and wider stakeholder teams.
  • Ensure compliance with all legal and statutory obligations applicable, including all standards and code compliance, and required planning permissions.
  • Inspect work within relevant discipline to ensure compliance with drawings, specifications, airport standards and statutory regulations.
  • Support the technical evaluation of potential contractors and consultants as required.
  • Support the Contractor to mobilise, including support to logistics planning and making necessary arrangements to support future delivery plans.
  • Manage and positively influence key stakeholders (both internal & external) associated with the project(s).
  • Coordinate with wider Airport departments to ensure all works are installed according to accepted design, with all planned works carried out by qualified and approved persons as per airport standards and operating procedures.
  • Manage the governance of the projects and implement the airport's processes and best practice, including regular project performance governance presentations to project boards and other reporting forums.
  • Lead the Lessons Identified process across all project activities and embed a culture of continuous improvement.
Key Competencies:
  • Experience (typically associated with excess of five years' experience) as a programme manager/senior project manager on multi-year projects with a value typically in excess of 20m in a relevant industry.
  • Experience of managing multiple, interfacing, concurrent projects highly desirable.
  • Experience in leading infrastructure programmes/projects in a live operational environment desirable.
  • Excellent leadership and influencing skills, with the ability to motivate, coach, facilitate and create opportunities for learning for others.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to articulate and present complex ideas in a simple way, including to senior stakeholders
  • Ability to manage complex, potentially conflicting stakeholder requirements.
  • Sound commercial and financial awareness. Knowledge and understanding of contract administration (NEC/JCT) highly desirable.
  • Knowledge and understanding of airport/transport environment desirable.
Qualifications:
  • Practitioner level in project management (e.g. APM or equivalent).
