Construction Sustainability Lead

Location: London Gatwick Airport (Hybrid working Tue, wed, Thurs in the Office)
Hours: Weekdays (40 hours)

Role Overview

Gatwick Airport is changing at an outstanding pace and this is an exciting opportunity for a Sustainability Lead to be part of a high performing team building Gatwick\'s future infrastructure.

The Construction Sustainability Lead will play a key role in ensuring that the CIP is delivered with sustainable outcomes at its core. The role will be responsible across the full Construction portfolio of works with a combined spend forecast to return to circa \xc2\xa3200+ million per annum. Key to achieving those outcomes will be driving innovative approaches.

The Construction Sustainability Lead will support and coach the Construction Team in raising standards and awareness.

This role will suit someone with a broad understanding of sustainability in the built environment and expertise in topics pertinent to construction and operation of built assets such as resource efficiency, carbon reduction and biodiversity. An understanding of best practice and future developments in sustainability would be advantageous.

What will you do?

- Lead the development and implementation of Gatwick\'s Sustainable Construction Strategy including pathways to best practice in Low Carbon Construction and in Resource Efficiency (including embracing the circular economy).
- Lead all aspects of sustainability and environmental management across the construction portfolio of work, including development and delivery of requirements, processes, procedures, tools and training for systematic integration of sustainability at all project stages: initiate, design, procurement and deliver.
- Develop sustainability requirements for the procurement of design consultants and contractors and ensure these are met during the tender process. Contribute to the contract management process to ensure effective delivery of the sustainability approach
- Develop, deploy, lead and manage the overall capability and performance of Sustainability in the Construction Team.
- Develop and continually enhance Gatwick\'s understanding of best practice across the Construction industry globally with respect to world leading sustainable construction technologies and outcomes.
- Develop and lead the framework to continuously develop and share best practice guidance on carbon reduction measures in construction. Identify and apply relevant lessons learnt to contribute to continuous improvement
- Develop KPIs & performance dashboards to monitor the delivery of key sustainability targets and progress. Present regular updates on performance and key initiatives to the Construction Leadership team.
- Support Gatwick\'s Head of Sustainability with the implementation of organisational level sustainability strategies within the span of influence of the Construction Team, including key elements of the Decade of Change Strategy
- Support the Project Teams by providing critical advice of sustainability-related statutory and best practice requirements. As well as supporting the delivery of project sustainability strategies.
- Engage in the identification of training needs relating to sustainability. Deliver sustainability training, upskilling and development of the Construction Team
- Champion the construction sustainability vision, ambition, and performance across the department, encouraging pride and ownership of the sustainability agenda across the Construction team

Do you have what we are looking for?

- Educated to Degree/Post-Grad level or equivalent in relevant engineering, environmental, construction or sustainability related discipline
- Chartered or Full Membership status with a recognised environmental professional institution (such as Institute of -Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) or equivalent). Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) status provided by another professional institution such as ICE of IMechE also acceptable.
- Experience with third-party environmental certification schemes such as BREEAM, CEQUAL, LEED or WELL
- Experience in engagement with industry initiatives such as LETI, Supply Chain Sustainability School, ICE Carbon Champions etc.
- Experience of planning and implementing sustainability and environmental requirements and objectives in design, procurement and construction of infrastructure projects.
- Extensive demonstrable technical knowledge of project and programme environmental and sustainability best practice.
- Strong continuous improvement mindset, identifying industry best practice and experience of driving change to improve business processes.
- Experience of working in a fast moving and rapidly changing environment.
- Good leadership and influencing skills, with the ability to motivate, coach, facilitate and create opportunities for learning for others.
- Wider experience of sustainability considerations (including the circular economy and low carbon construction) and with an in-depth understanding of the interaction of environmental, community engagement and the local impacts of an airport.
- Experience as a senior Environment/Sustainability professional leading aspects of sustainability and environmental management within a large capital-intensive organisation (typically involving capital programmes of over \xc2\xa3100m+ per annum).
- Good communication skills with the ability to articulate and present complex ideas or technical information as compelling content to stakeholders at all levels, including senior management.
- Technically robust with commercial awareness - an expert in a range of sustainability topics
- Knowledge and understanding of airport environment desirable.
