Job Description


This post is designed to recruit a full time Cardiologist providing a full range of skills in cardiac electrophysiology and device therapy in response to a growing volume of lab work for arrhythmias (including atrial fibrillation) and device work.It is planned that the new consultant would undertake both invasive/interventional electrophysiology (standard and complex) and device implantation (including a lab session that would be specifically directed to hands-on teaching of SpRs). In addition to the clinical work there is a thriving programme of clinical and basic research in arrhythmia (AF and VT) and heart failure.University Hospital provides tertiary cardiac services for just under 1 million people in Coventry & Warwickshire. We also provide EP cover for our surrounding area (Worcestershire and Heart of England). We provide very high-quality revascularisation, heart failure, TAVI and arrhythmia services and their success has led to growth which has resulted in the need to increase our consultant body. It is envisaged that the arrhythmia service will closely support our partner hospitals in delivering accessible, high quality treatment to the people of Coventry & Warwickshire and beyond.Main duties of the jobEach Consultant cardiologist has two weekly general cardiology outpatient clinics. A consultant would be expected to see 8 new or 10 follow up patients (or proportionate mixture of patients) in each clinic. Up to two additional urgent patients may be booked, but not on a routine basis. The new post will involve expanding our EP service and supporting additional outpatient arrhythmia clinics to see patients with a variety of arrhythmia related problems such as those needing cardiac electrophysiology and ablation of both simple and complex arrhythmias patients may also need permanent cardiac pacemakers, ICDs or Cardiac Resynchronisation Therapy (biventricular pacing). Support may also be needed for a nurse led transient loss of consciousness (TLOC) clinic. All clinics have very strong support from dedicated, skilled, technical staff. We plan to commence a new dedicated HCM clinic and the new appointee will be integral in this service. Medical secretary support and an equipped office will be provided.The successful candidate would be expected to take part in the Consultant of the Week rota to cover Acute Cardiology admissions. This would require a daily ward round (including Saturday and Sunday), but no out of hours on call would be necessary. The emphasis will be on exiting research studies looking at AF, sudden cardiac death and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). Studies that fall within the National Institute of Health Research portfolio and additionally attract external grant support, such as British Heart Foundation, would also be encouraged. The Speciality recognises that high quality research is an integral part of development and quality care and undertakes to support and encourage such activities wherever possible. Working closely with allied Universities (Warwick/Coventry) to develop bench to bedside research projects would be encouraged.Clinical Audit and GovernanceThe Trust is committed to providing patient care of the highest quality. Job plans are constructed to allow practical sessional commitment for medical audit, clinical governance and continuing medical education. The post holder will be required to participate in clinical audit activities including clinical audit meetings. The post holder will have an objective team approach to and participation in the specialties efforts to monitor and improve standards and critical incident whilst actively supporting evidence-based guideline implementation.Job PlanningA formal job plan will be agreed between the appointee and their Clinical Lead/Director on behalf of the Medical Director three months after the commencement date of the appointment. The job plan should be reviewed annually. It will cover all aspects of a consultants professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education and managerial responsibilities, including a clear schedule of commitments, both internal and external. It should include personal objectives, including details of their link to wider service objectives and details of the support required by the consultant to fulfil the job plan and the objectives.Mentor SupportAll new consultants are expected to choose a mentor from the Trusts list of trained mentors.
