Job Description

The post offered is a substantive (pending approval) Consultant position in emergency liaison psychiatry for general adults and the older adult population. This is working across the exciting and award-winning assessment services in the North Central London partnership. The services are; the Mental Health Crisis Assessment Service (MHCAS) and the Health Based Place of Safety Service (HBPOS).



The post has become available as the previous full time incumbent has been taken on a clinical directorship role.



Substantive role pending approval from Royal College of Psychiatrists Primary base is at Highgate Mental Health Centre West, Dartmouth Park Hill, London N19 5XN.



Work closely with the other Consultants and the Acute Division clinical director, associate clinical director, service director, service manager and team manager to provide strategic clinical leadership to the multi-professional group and contribute to strategic direction of the unit and development of this care pathway.



Support in providing day to day clinical leadership to an experienced Multi-disciplinary team. This will include undertaking routine daily section 136/135 assessments in the HBPOS unit and senior medical reviews and MHAA's at MHCAS; liaising with emergency department liaison teams/medical staff (when patients move between the two services); providing brief clinical reports and handover information to inpatient ward staff prior to transfer of patients subsequently detained under the mental health act and providing clinical guidance to other team members as and when required.



Participate in a daily team supervision/clinical handover de-briefing session for overnight on-call Core and Higher trainees (when handing over clinical responsibility to the team's medical team).

The Post-holder and the team are also expected to forge close links with other Liaison Consultants in the Trust based at the Whittington, University College and Royal Free Hospital Trusts as well as in neighbouring boroughs (Islington, Haringey, BArent, Enfield and Hackney).



They will also work closely with the Trust's 3 crisis teams. This will be particularly important in ensuring the effective follow-up care and seamless transfer of patients who may require the organization of follow-up care if subsequently not detained under the mental health act.



The post holder is expected to work in an integrated way with liaison colleagues in aligned services. HBPOS is on the Highgate West hospital site co-located with the Whittington Hospital Liaison team who cover the Whittington Hospital. It is anticipated that the post holder would work seamlessly with their colleagues in this team to support patient care when there are pressures in the system.
