Job Description

You will join our Consultant-led Emergency Medicine team across UHMBT, delivering senior-level care, clinical oversight, and operational leadership to ensure the safe, efficient, and patient-centred management of acute presentations. This role supports our integrated, multi-site model including EDs, UTC, and alongside medical SDEC services at RLI
1.Clinical Leadership & Direct Patient Care
Senior Clinician Duties: Provide expert assessment, resuscitation, diagnosis, and treatment of undifferentiated adult and paediatric emergencies on a 24/7 rota
Team Leadership: Lead resuscitation and major incident responses, oversee designated clinical areas (e.g. majors, resus, CDU/SDEC), and coordinate with nursing and junior medical staff
2. Governance, Safety & Quality
Audit & Clinical Governance: Design, lead, and implement audit and QI projects to ensure high-quality, safe care
Incident Management: Participate in safety rounds, major incident planning, and incident reviews
3. Education & Supervision
Training Role: Supervise and mentor junior medical staff (STs, F2s, RCP trainees), nursing staff, paramedics, medical students, and others
Teaching & CPD: Participate in departmental teaching, simulation training, and ensure ongoing professional development (FRCEM, appraisal, revalidation)
4. Operational Management
Service Planning: Contribute to workforce planning, job planning, rota design, and ensuring coverage aligns with RCEM recommendations (e.g. consultant presence during peaks)
Main duties of the job
Provide senior-level assessment, resuscitation, diagnosis, and ongoing management of undifferentiated emergency presentations
Lead resuscitation teams in major incidents (trauma, cardiac arrest) and run specific ED areas (e.g., Resus, Majors, SDEC/CDU)
Supervise junior doctors, nurse practitioners, and other clinical staff at the bedside, ensuring safe, senior review.
Conduct regular ED safety rounds and oversight of clinical management plans.
Participate in clinical governance, audits, incident reviews, and quality improvement initiatives.
Contribute to guideline development, risk management strategies, and performance monitoring .
Act as clinical and educational supervisor to junior/regional trainees, medical students, and allied health staff.
Organise and deliver teaching sessions--both formal (simulations, life support courses) and informal ward-based training.
Participate in daily job-planning and appoint consultant rota (including on-call, nights & weekends).
Ensure smooth patient flow: aim for timely discharge, admissions, or transfers.
Oversee resource use--staffing cover, equipment selection, and cross-trust collaboration .
About us
We operatefrom three main hospitals-Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, andUlverstonCommunity Health Centre.
FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.
WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.
All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies,daycase and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Maintain BLS, ALS/ATLS/APLS certifications and meet GMC revalidation and CPD requirements

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a licence to practise.
