We see over 125,000 patients per annum, 25% of whom are managed in our integrated Paediatric ED. As a regional PCI, vascular and stroke centre as well as busy trauma unit you will be guaranteed a rich and varied caseload of acute presentations. A subspecialty qualification would be welcome, but not mandatory. The appointee will be based at the Frimley Park site with opportunities for cross-site working at our other ED in Wexham Park Hospital. The appointee will be expected to join the annualised rota which allows greater flexibility to pursue other interests and help maintain a good work life balance. The DCC will be annualised at a quarterly rota meeting to provide ED shop floor cover from 0800-midnight 7 days a week. The weekend frequency is 1 in 6 weekends working either a day (08-17.30) or late (17.30-00.00 with on-call from home). There are aspirations with additional ED Consultant numbers towards expanding the evening and weekend shift pattern in accordance with the RCEM workforce document. Job responsibilitiesGovernance and quality improvementEach consultant is expected to take an active role in clinical governance including quality improvement (QI), incident reporting (both adverse and positive), complaints review, CPD and Evidence-Based Medicine. The department has separate Clinical Governance and QI leads.ResearchThere is an active research programme within the ED, with involvement in national portfolio projects and regional studies.TeachingThe appointee will be expected to contribute to the departmental teaching programme for consultant, middle tier and junior tier ED doctors. The ED hosts medical students from Southampton and St Georges and there is opportunity to be involved in their educational programme in ED. The PGEC co-ordinates simulation, life-support courses (off-site) and other educational opportunities for ED staff.Other DutiesThe appointee may wish to take on other roles in conjunction with their clinical role. Any positions offered from outside of the Trust must be discussed with the Chief of Service prior to the position being accepted, so that the impact of this can be fully considered and any job plan amendments undertaken if any additional role is to be accepted.Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential

  • FRCEM or equivalent
  • On (or within 6 months of entry to) the UK specialist register for Emergency Medicine (via CCT or CESR)
  • ALS/ ATLS/ APLS (or equivalent) provider status
Desirable
  • ALS/ATLS/APLS Instructor status
  • Dual accreditation/ registered sub speciality interest
Experiance
Essential
  • Broad experience in emergency medicine in UK
  • Evidence of personal experience in all areas of RCEM curriculum
  • Evidence of personal participation in audit projects that have brought about change
  • Evidence of participation in postgraduate and undergraduate teaching programmes
  • Evidence of Level 1 EM US competencies
Desirable
  • RSI Trained
  • Level 2 EM US competencies
  • Training in educational supervision
  • Training in appraisal
  • Participation in research projects
  • Published research
Skills/Mental Abilities
Essential
  • Able to evaluate own clinical practice
  • Able to demonstrate innovative thinking
