Consultant in Haematology

Two highly motivated colleagues with excellent communication and team working skills, who want to deliver the best haematology care for our local population.



These are replacement posts, and the successful candidates will join a well-established and cohesive team of five consultants.



The Trust provides Haematology care to a population of approximately 800 000, including high intensity chemotherapy services, but patients are referred to other centres for stem cell transplantation. Outpatient chemotherapy can be delivered in both York and Scarborough, whilst all inpatient care is provided on the York site.



The roles are predominantly based in York Hospital with outreach to the Scarborough site. Exact duties are open to negotiation, depending on the interests of the successful candidates. The post holders will contribute to clinical and laboratory work and be part of a one in seven non-resident on call rota.



Although the posts are full time posts, candidates who wish to work less than full time are encouraged to apply.

Clinical Haematology in York and Scarborough



The Clinical Haematology service covers the full range of adult haematological disorders including all types of haematological malignancy, apart from Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia. We are a non-comprehensive haemophilia centre. The MDT benefits from specialist input from HMDS, local radiologists and a Leeds Clinical Oncologist.



High intensity chemotherapy is provided solely on the York site, where there is a purpose-built 18 bedded inpatient facility and a Haematology-Oncology outpatient and chemotherapy unit. Scarborough provides a low-intermediate chemotherapy service in a dedicated outpatient and chemotherapy unit. Scarborough patients requiring hospitalisation are admitted to acute medicine, with transfer to York when appropriate. High intensity chemotherapy provision for Scarborough is shared with Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust through agreed protocols and pathways. Patients are referred to Hull or Leeds for autograft and radiotherapy; Leeds is our allograft centre.



Currently, most consultants treat the full range of haematological conditions, but as we have our own named patients, there is potential flexibility for an established consultant who has already subspecialised, to be accommodated - please do contact us to discuss this. It is anticipated that as the service expands and develops, there will be scope for sub-specialisation. This work is in its early stages and the successful applicant will be able to contribute fully to any change.



There is a combined paediatric/haematology clinic in York, however all cases of paediatric haematological malignancy are referred directly to Leeds. Current non-consultant clinics include specialist nurse led lymphoma clinics, pharmacist led hydroxycarbamide and stable CML clinics and a physician associate clinic for asymptomatic myeloma, Waldenstroms and CLL. Low risk MGUS and CLL monitoring is overseen by an outreach service run by HMDS.



Our knowledgeable Specialist Nursing team provide excellent support in both York and Scarborough: 7 Clinical Nurse Specialists, 2 Healthcare Assistants and 2 co-ordinators, plus an ACP on the Scarborough site. Our junior medical team consists of 2 WTE Specialist Registrars from the Leeds rotation, 2 staff grades, 1 Physician Associate, and a rotational IMT1 and FY2. The acute oncology team provide telephone triage and review of unwell chemotherapy patients, as well as providing support for outlying inpatients. There is a team of dedicated chemotherapy nurses on each site. The efficient secretarial team ensure that communications are sent in a timely manner and rise to any logistical challenge.



Laboratory Haematology



The current Haematology laboratory service is provided at two sites, Scarborough and York Hospitals, with a small satellite laboratory at Bridlington Hospital. The service is led by the Haematology Laboratory Lead consultant, Head BMS across sites and Operational Managers at each site. Both Scarborough and York run a round-the-clock service, with 19 operational BMS staff in York and 12 in Scarborough.



The Head BMS chairs the Haematology Senior Management Team meetings, which review laboratory practice. The Laboratory Lead consultant chairs the Hospital Transfusion Committee, supported by 2 Transfusion Practitioners and feeding into the Regional Transfusion Committee in Leeds. Each site is UKAS accredited and IBMS approved for training.



The in-house test repertoire is commensurate with that of a medium size teaching hospital. The York site provides extensive specialist coagulation testing to support the haemophilia and haemostasis service. Referral service is provided by laboratories at Leeds and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. We are very fortunate that all haematological malignancy diagnostic work, including bone marrow reporting, is referred to HMDS in Leeds, a centre of excellence.



In November 2021 York and Scarborough joined with Hull Hospital laboratories to make SHYPS (Scarborough Hull and York Pathology Services) and Dr Todd is the pathology network clinical director. The chief haematology and transfusion posts now work across all sites with deputies based in York and Hull. Work is ongoing to provide a unified service, which will be greatly helped with the introduction of a new Laboratory Information Management system.
