Job Description


Required to fill these 2 replacement posts within the anaesthetic department at St James Hospital.
You will participate in the undergraduate teaching program for the school of Medicine, University of Leeds, which is organised on specialty or clinical area basis. The appointee, with colleagues, will contribute to the teaching of postgraduates, including the teaching program for StRs in Anaesthesia in the Yorkshire Deanery.

Main duties of the job
The successful applicants should possess FRCA (or equivalent) and should be included on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview, if currently within a training programme within the UK. In accordance with the consultant appointment regulations, all other categories of doctors must be on the Specialist Register.
Applicants should have established skills in general adult anaesthesia, with experience in thoracic, regional and upper GI Anaesthesia. Excellent communication and team working skills, a strong commitment to teaching and service development are essential.
Consideration will be given to applicants who wish to work full or part time and those wishing to job share.

Job description
Job responsibilities
In relation to this post, there is a requirement for increased anaesthetic capacity to deliver additional activity coupled with the recurrent dependence on locum consultant anaesthetists to deliver the existing service. The requirement to deliver the current service level agreements and additional elective sessions requires an increase in the number of anaesthetic consultants employed by the Trust.
2. OBJECTIVES OF THE POST
1. To work with other consultant colleagues in the provision of a comprehensive paediatric
anaesthetic service in the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.
2. To develop and/or consolidate expertise in anaesthesia for major Hepatobiliary surgery in children
3. To develop and/or consolidate expertise in paediatric anaesthesia.
4. To maintain and expand the excellence of teaching and research already established
within the Trust.
5. To support service plans for the specialty, taking account of the changes in clinical
practice and new technologies available.
6. To participate in and progress Clinical Governance

Qualifications
Essential

  • FRCA or equivalent qualification.
  • Hold full GMC Registration with a license to practice.
  • YOUR GMC NUMBER MUST BE FULLY STATED IN YOUR APPLICATION FORM.
  • Eligibility to work in the UK.
  • Is up to date and fit to practise safely.
Desirable
  • Relevant higher degree.
Training, Research, Teaching & Audit
Essential
  • Should have completed a recognised training programme in anaesthesia.
  • Evidence of the ability to carry out medical research.
  • Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors.
  • Experience of participation in regular clinical audit.
Desirable
  • Previous experience of supervising research by junior staff.
  • Evidence of Small Group Teaching, organising/ delivering formal teaching programme.
  • Completion of audit cycle and demonstrating quality improvement.
Experience
Essential
  • Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in anaesthesia.
  • Specifically, must demonstrate higher training in anaesthesia.
  • Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances.
Management, Interpersonal Skills & Other Requirements

  • Understanding of current issues in the NHS.

  • *Demonstrate ability to relate to and work within a team.
  • *Hold full GMC Registration with a license to practice.
  • *Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via:
  • -CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview) CESR (or) international applicants should comply with the GMC specialty registration process. CESR applicants must be on the relevant Specialist Register at the time of application.

  • Attendance at recognised management course, evidence of leadership
