In October 2014, NHS England approved the case for change for the way that specialist cardiovascular services are provided across north and east London, enabling the creation of the Barts Heart Centre. The Barts Heart Centre was created by combining the services and staff from the London Chest Hospital and UCLH's The Heart Hospital, along with those already running at St Bartholomew's.In October 2016, we completed the scheduled expansion of the Barts Heart Centre. This introduced state-of-the-art facilities: 10 theatres, 10 catheter labs (including 2 hybrid rooms), 255 general cardiac beds, with 98 higher acuity care beds including 58 Level 3 critical care beds.Barts Heart Centre performs more heart surgery, HAC PCIs, MRI and CT scans than any other centre in the world. It is Europe's largest specialised cardiovascular centre, covering a population of three million people across north and east London, west Essex and beyond. It brings together a wide range of expertise in clinical care, research and education for cardiovascular conditions.It also creates the world's biggest centre of excellence for adults with congenital heart disease. The Thorax Centre provides multi-disciplinary care for patients with lung disease.Please be advised that the vacancy advertisement may close early if a sufficient number of applications are received therefore, we recommend that you submit your application as soon as possible to avoid disappointmentMain duties of the jobThe Department of Perioperative Medicine (Intensive Care Medicine, Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia and Critical Care and General Anaesthesia), led by Dr Jeremy Cordingley and Dr Martin Lees, the Cardiothoracic Surgical department (led by Mr Steve Edmondson), the Interventional Cardiology department (led by Prof Anthony Mathur) and the Electrophysiology department (led by Dr Mark Early) form part of the Cardiovascular Clinical Academic Group, led by Professor Charles Knight, CAG Director. The group works closely with the School of Medicine and Dentistry and the William Harvey Institute to promote clinical translational research. Recently, we announced exciting plans to found a joint UCL and QMUL Cardiovascular Institute. We also have well established links with referring district general hospitals and are committed to providing high quality specialist cardiac services for the whole population of north central and north east London and to work with the Network and partner DGHs to continue to improve access to cardiac, vascular and thoracic care. Qualifications/Clinical Skills
Essential

  • GMC Registration
  • CCT in anaesthesia or, if in training within 6 months of CCT
  • FRCA or equivalent
  • Experience of UK healthcare system
Desirable
  • ALS/CALS
Special Knowledge/Abilities and/or Experience
Essential
  • Proficient in relevant procedures such as vascular access, fibreoptic bronchoscopy
  • Advanced transoesophageal echocardiography skills
  • Higher training in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia and Critical Care, at least 6 months.
  • Training and experience in cardiac critical care
  • Experience in the perioperative care of patients including pain management
  • Experience in anaesthetising patients for complex Aortovascular and Endovascular surgery
Desirable
  • Sound understanding of training relationships within the programme
  • Ability to promote equality of opportunity in all aspects of medical education
  • Experience working across boundaries (e.g. between specialties, local and national education providers, and across professional groups)
  • TOE/TTE Accreditation
  • Training in Acute Pain management
Teaching & Training
Essential
  • Involvement in teaching junior medical staff, nurses and allied health professionals
  • Evidence of training in teaching skills
Desirable
  • CALS, ATLS, ALS, APLS or PALS instructor status
  • Certificate of education
  • Involvement in undergraduate education
Personal Skills/Qualities

  • Ability to communicate clearly and intelligently in written and spoken English
  • Ability to lead a multidisciplinary team, make decisions and exert appropriate authority.
