Job Description


We are looking for forward thinking, enthusiastic and motivated people to join our Consultant team at SWBH as we prepare to move into our new emergency department at Midlands Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH) with a planned opening date of 2024. We are looking for Emergency Medicine consultants, and EM Consultants with a Paediatric interest as well as Paediatricians with an interest in the Emergency care of children.

Currently there are 2 Emergency Departments (EDs) at City and Sandwell both with dedicated Childrens\' areas. Successful applicants would be expected to help provide leadership and high quality emergency care across both sites. City and Sandwell EDs currently see approx. 200,000 pts a year and 32,000 children. The post will be based cross site in the 2 Emergency Departments of Sandwell and City Hospitals. We are seeking applicants who will join us in our commitment to providing high quality, consultant led emergency care.

Additional Information: There is an opportunity for the post holder to take on the lead PEM role if they have the relevant experience and interest. This lead role will contribute to and help shape the future of Childrens\' services within both EDs and into the new Midlands Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH). Main duties of the job

The duties of this post will include contributing to the leadership, development and delivery of a high-quality Emergency and/ or Paediatric Emergency service across both departments. Including providing clinical leadership, overseeing pathway development and workforce development.

This is a 10 PA post with an option for negotiated additional DCC up to a maximum of 12 PA. This job provides an exciting opportunity to join the Emergency Department Team in preparation for the merging of both current Emergency Departments in SWBH NHS Trust.

Your rota will be dependent on whether applying for Emergency Medicine or Paediatric EM. Please see individual s attached. For PEM post we anticipate you will be working regular shifts within the Childrens\' ED. We have implemented an annualised rota for the consultants which enable a good work life balance and adds flexibility. When we move to a single site there will be further opportunities towards a self-rostering rota.

As well as being the closest adult hospital to Birminghams busy city centre, Midland Metropolitan University Hospital will be a busy Trauma Unit and offer dedicated maternity and childrens services. Crucially, it will bring together teams who provide acute Emergency Care as part of its new Acute care model consisting of the ED, AMU, Childrens ED, and Medical and Surgical SDEC units.

  • Ultrasound level 1 competency Entry on the Specialist Register in Emergency Medicine (or CCT expected within 6 months from the date of interview)
  • FRCEM or equivalent
  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required to gain CCT in Emergency Medicine/PEM
  • Fulfils all other essential criteria as per Personal Specification

Birmingham as a place to live and work

City Hospital and the Midlands Metropolitan Hospital site are close to Birmingham City Centre and the popular suburbs of Edgbaston, Bearwood, Harborne and. Moseley. There are six towns that serve Sandwell, they are Oldbury, Rowley Regis, Smethwick, Tipton, Wednesbury, and West Bromwich. Each have their own individual character and attractions.
