Consultant In General Intensive Care

Southampton, ENG, GB, United Kingdom

Job Description

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us.

Please see below for detailed job description of the role.

We are looking for a skilled and versatile Consultant Intensivist, with good inter-personal skills, to join this large, friendly and supportive department.

The GICU team is fully integrated with the Anaesthetic department, and a majority of GICU Consultants also deliver Anaesthetic sessions.

UHS is the largest centre for Intensive Care on the South Coast and has a regional responsibility for delivery of specialist care, education and Research. The Unit achieves very high quality ICNARC data and some of the best outcomes nationally from wave 1of the SARS-Covid19 pandemic.

The General ICU has been recently completely rebuilt, and this state-of-the-art facility opened in November 2020. The quality of the environment in the new unit is second to none and provides a greatly enhanced GICU environment to the benefit of both staff and patients.

As one of the largest acute teaching Trusts in England, we offer learning and development opportunities to help you achieve the career you aspire to. UHS is rated 'Good' by the CQC and in the latest national NHS Staff Survey, we were in the top 10 acute trusts for staff engagement and for staff recommending the hospital as a place to work or receive care.

We support flexible working and will consider requests taking into account the needs of the service. UHS employees are able to access a range of NHS discounts, are entitled to a minimum of 35 days paid holiday (pro rata), and we offer a generous pension scheme.

Southampton is an attractive place to live and work situated on the south coast, with an international airport and direct trains to London. The New Forest National Park and beaches of the Jurassic coast are also right on our doorstep. The city offers living costs 20% lower than London and 14 schools rated outstanding by Ofsted.

UHS is the Major Trauma Centre for the region. UHS has extensive Research facilities including the Welcome Clinical Research and the Biomedical Research Unit, and the GICU team plays a major part in relevant and national Research agendas.

You will be joining a cohesive team who are working together to deliver high quality care for patients in these difficult and uncertain times.

We are concerned for the well-being of our Consultants and attention is paid to work life balance in the detailed construction of job plans. Although we are a large department overall, we are able to offer a supportive environment for work. There is a culture of collaboration and co-operation across the Department. We are passionate about patient care and believe that is best achieved by well supported staff.

These posts are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service determined by the UHS NHS FT Board.

Applicants will be expected to demonstrate their competence to communicate in spoken and written English.

This includes a detailed breakdown of the key responsibilities, role expectations, and the qualifications we are looking for. It outlines the essential criteria for the role and is designed to support you in preparing your application by helping you evaluate how your skills, experience, and professional background align with the requirements of the role.
