Job Description


Applications are invited for a substantive Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist with a dedicated focus on Labour Ward Leadership and a special interest in simulation-based training. We seek candidates with established expertise in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, coupled with a demonstrated commitment to enhancing patient safety, optimizing team performance, and advancing training through simulation methodologies.The successful applicant will participate in a 1:14 on-call rota, lead Labour Ward management during designated hot weeks, and provide emergency gynaecology cover. This position entails active involvement in managing complex obstetric cases, leading multidisciplinary teams, and maintaining the highest standards of care within the delivery suite. Additionally, the post holder will contribute to general obstetrics and gynaecology clinics, elective and emergency theatres, and simulation-based teaching programs.Main duties of the jobThis is RCOG approved post.As the Labour Ward Lead, the appointed consultant will oversee the daily operations of the obstetric unit during allocated hot weeks. During this period, the consultant will deliver direct, consultant-led care across the unit, with other clinical duties temporarily suspended to ensure a dedicated focus on obstetric care. Emergency gynaecology cover during these weeks will be provided by a separate consultant.The role also encompasses responsibility for the development and enhancement of the simulation training program. This includes designing and delivering multidisciplinary simulation sessions aimed at improving clinical outcomes and fostering cohesive team performance in high-risk obstetric scenarios.This post offers 10 Programmed Activities (PAs), with the flexibility to develop additional roles and responsibilities through mutual agree.About usThe Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust is climbing the performance league tables and was shortlisted for the first ever National Compassionate Patient Care Award and finished runner-up in the 500 entry Guardian Public Service Award for measuring excellence. Qualifications
Essential

  • Full GMC registration oMRCOG or appropriate specialist registration oRelevant CCT or equivalent ('equivalence' must be confirmed by GMC by date of AAC)*
  • Must be expecting to receive CCT within the next six months to be eligible for interview. All other candidates must already be on the GMC Specialist Register.
  • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register or eligibility for entry within 6 months of the date of the AAC*
  • CCST or Clinical training and experience in general obstetrics and gynecology equivalent to that required for a UK CCST
  • RCOG ATSM or similar in Labour ward
  • Experience in Simulation Training lead or PROMPT training
  • RCOG ATSM in General Gynecology (As the Post covers Both general Obstetrics and Gynecology)
Management
Desirable
  • Evidence of management and administration experience
  • Previous relevant Clinical Leadership role
Clinical Experience
Essential
  • CCST or Clinical training and experience in general obstetrics and gynecology equivalent to that required for a UK CCST
  • RCOG ATSM or similar in Labour ward
  • Experience in Simulation Training lead or PROMPT training
  • RCOG ATSM in General Gynecology (As the Post covers Both general Obstetrics and Gynecology)
Desirable
  • Additional clinical experience/training that may be required
  • Additional RCOG ATSM(s) in Obstetrics or Gynecology (Acute Gynecology/Early Pregnancy or Hysteroscopy or Colposcopy or High-risk Pregnancy) are desirable.
